Testing the role of online group-based supervision for local humanitarian workers following a crisis
The 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes caused widespread destruction, leaving millions without access to basic needs and services. Caring for Carers (C4C), an online group-based supervision program for Syrian mental health workers, started three months prior to the earthquakes. This study examined the role of this program in supporting the mental and occupational health of the participants following this crisis. A mixed-method longitudinal design was…
Dimensionality of the Swahili version of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) in a Kenyan population
The current study evaluated the Kiswahili version of General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) in a Kenyan context comprising of women exposed to gender-based violence. Participants were randomly drawn from community sampling using household screening methods in peri-urban areas in Nairobi. A total of 1,394 participants with varying levels of literacy (years of education: mean [M] = 9.42; standard deviation [SD] = 3.73) and aged between 18 and 89 yea…
The course of symptoms over time in people with posttraumatic stress disorder
The observed pattern of findings indicate that although PTSD diagnoses often remain consistent over time, the symptoms that comprise this diagnosis can fluctuate. Clinicians should be sensitive to the changing symptoms that PTSD patients can display over time. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
New adolescent grief scales open new research possibilities
In this commentary, we highlight the availability of two newly developed instruments that measure grief in adolescents. We present similarities and differences regarding their content, factor structure, and characteristics of the validated populations. Given the small body of adolescent grief instruments, these two new scales will prove to be useful instruments to enhance our knowledge of grief and effectiveness of grief interventions in this pop…
The effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on refugees' parenting and their children's mental health
BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents, who account for most of the world's refugees, have an increased prevalence of psychological disorders. The mental health of refugee children is often associated with the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their caregivers. Despite the potential for refugee caregivers' PTSD to affect child mental health, little evidence exists concerning the underlying mechanisms of this association. This stu…
Suicide Rates After Discharge From Psychiatric Facilities
Effectiveness of a brief behavioural intervention on psychological distress among women with a history of gender-based violence in urban Kenya
BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) represents a major cause of psychological morbidity worldwide, and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although there are effective treatments for common mental disorders associated with GBV, they typically require lengthy treatment programs that may limit scaling up in LMICs. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of a new 5-session behavioural treatment called Problem Ma…
Positive strategies men regularly use to prevent and manage depression
The results demonstrate that the men in the study currently use, and are open to using, a broad range of practical, social, emotional, cognitive and problem-solving strategies to maintain their mental health. This is significant for men in the community who may not be in contact with professional health services and would benefit from health messages promoting positive strategies as effective tools in the prevention and management of depression
Men, depression, and coping
The Long and the Short of It
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the strategies people use to cope with stress were associated with differing serotonin transporter (5-HTT) genotypes. The short (s) variant of the 5-HTT promoter polymorphism has been associated with an increased likelihood of depression after significant life stress and greater emotional reactivity to fear-invoking stimuli. METHODS: Coping strategies were assessed within a longitudinal study in 1993. Ten years later…
Fraternal Birth Order and Ratio of Heterosexual/Homosexual Feelings in Women and Men
Studies of the 2-3% of persons who identify as homosexual found men but not women had more older brothers than persons who identify as heterosexual. The present study investigated the birth order in the approximately 20% of men and women who anonymously report some homosexual feelings, few of whom identify as homosexual. The number of older brothers and sisters was investigated in seven cohorts: 319 male twins; and 49, 54, and 61 female and 66, 1…
Assessing Outcome in Community Mental Health Patients
Background: We undertook a twelve-month intervention study for community mental health patients using a number of measures administered at baseline and at twelve months. Overall improvement in that sample allowed for comparative analyses of the key measures in terms of their ability to measure and to predict outcome. Aims: To assess and compare the usefulness of each of the measures in predicting outcome status. Methods: A patient-rated quality o…
Simultaneous test procedures and the choice of a test statistic in Manova
Problems associated with the use of a preliminary multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test in conjunction with univariate follow-up tests can be avoided if follow-up tests are carried out with a simultaneous test procedure (STP) derived from the MANOVA test statistic used for the overall test. It is argued that the choice of a MANOVA test statistic for such analyses should be based on the power and robustness of MANOVA STPS rather than on …
