  • Making death through producing life

    Open Access•Josef Barla•ARTICLE•BioSocieties•2025

This article explores how advances in synthetic biology and genetic engineering transform the relationship between life and death under contemporary biocapitalism. Discussing two cases of synthetically produced mosquitoes designed to combat vector-borne diseases by targeting their own species, the article contends that these organisms function not only as (lively) commodities but also as metabolically working bodies. These mosquitoes, as the arti…

Against the backdrop of the broad reception of Karen Barad's framework of agential realism, it comes as a surprise that there has been little discussion so far of her core concept of diffraction in the social studies of science. This article aims to evaluate the methodological potentials of a diffractive approach for science studies. In order to achieve this, I will examine Barad's take on quantum mechanics, which serves as the foundation for her…

  • A Climate of Misogyny

    Sophie Bjork-Jame, Josef Barla•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2021

In this interview, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe discusses with Sophie Bjork-James and Josef Barla: the issue of gender inequality in the natural sciences; the toxic entanglement of right-wing extremism, sexism and anti-science rhetoric in discourses on climate change; the far-reaching institutional and social consequences of the Trump administration's attacks on climate science research and advocacy; as well as the politics of ignorance and…

  • Introduction

    Josef Barla, Sophie Bjork-Jame•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2021•Cited by: 14•References: 24

This essay introduces the special issue of Australian Feminist Studies on ‘Climate Change, Gender, and Authoritarianism: Entanglements of Anti-Feminism and Anti-Environmentalism in the Far-Right’. Starting from the hypothesis that anti-feminism functions as a metalanguage in the far-right’s fight against liberal democracy as well as social and environmental justice, this special issue explores how anti-feminism and anti-environmentalism merge and…

  • The Techno-Apparatus of Bodily Production

    Josef Barla•BOOK•Techno-Apparatus of Bodily…•2019

What if the terms "technology" and "the body" did not refer to distinct phenomena interacting in one way or another? What if we understood their relationship as far more intimate - technologies as always already embodied, material bodies as always already technologized? What would it mean, then, to understand the relationship between technology and the body as a relation of indeterminacy? Expanding on the concept of the apparatus of bodily produc…

  • Technoecologies of Borders

    Josef Barla, Christoph Hubatschke•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 17

Reading Félix Guattari's concept of ecology through feminist accounts of care and solidarity, and vice versa, in this article, we propose the concept of feminist technoecology as a speculative mode of thinking with borders. Rather than considering borders as lines on maps or primarily as physical arrangements, we argue that feminist technoecology allows for an understanding of borders as multispecies matters of care where cuts that matter are ena…
