The Portrayal of Older Adults in Advertising
From a multinational perspective, this article provides an overview of a number of research programs examining portrayals of older adults in advertising. The research described includes both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the place of older people in advertising and the ways this is associated with older adults' place in society. This article is organized around three central themes: an overview of the major theoretical perspectives sur…
“Half-Hearted Tokens of Transparent Love”? “Ethnic” Postcards and the Visual Mediation of Host–tourist Communication
One negotiation site of heavily mediated, indirect, and usually inadvertent communication between hosts and tourists is the picture postcard rack. As “hegemonically scripted discourses,” postcards make important assumptions about the tourist’s touristic experience, as well as the image of that experience she/he will want to communicate to others “back home.” Of more importance, however, are the assumptions being made in postcards about the people…
Shifting alignment and negotiating sociality in travel agency discourse
Institutional talk, including service encounter discourse, has typically been taken to be ‘asymmetrical’ and the participants of these encounters to be constrained in terms of their allowable conversational contributions. This article explores shifts of alignment from normative serverclient alignments into different directions, involving symmetrical positionings of various kinds in travel agency spoken discourse. It is shown how these shifts occu…
The Uses and Representations of Local Languages in Tourist Destinations
This paper analyses instances of the use and representation of local languages (other than English) in British TV holiday shows. Although most hosts/locals featured in the holiday programmes use English to communicate with the travelling journalists, regardless of the official status of English in their territories, it is not uncommon for the presenters to initiate interaction with the locals in their native language, to quote 'foreign' language …
Elderly Lifestyles in the 21st Century
Golden Times for Golden Agers
With the lowering of retirement age, a new group of consumers of leisure has emerged. The tourist industry has responded by offering holidays for the over 50s or holidays for “the 50-plus lifestyle”. This paper first looks at the discursive packaging of these holidays in brochures widely available in the U.K., using a broadly critical discourse analysis framework (e.g., Fairclough, 1995). The dilemmas of characterizing the target group and the ho…
Young at heart’
This paper examines, through discourse analysis at a micro level, how age identities become interactionally constructed through talk. After a brief overview of the constructivist arguments, the focus is on a single-case interaction between an older client couple and three travel agency assistants. The various means by which age is made salient by the participants and the ensuing age identities that are created for and by the couple in particular …
