Seongho Yi Ik's Natural Theory of Emotions
New Compilation of the Four-Seven Debate ( Sachil Sinpyeon 四七新編) cut across previously held distinctions between the Four Beginnings and the Seven Feelings and carved out a greater role for emotions as a normative force in moral life. This not only unsettled the traditional normative hierarchy of gong and sa but also provided an alternative conceptual mapping of these terms and their relations based on a more materialistic and embodied psychologi…

Virtuous Contempt and the Ritual Community in Confucius and Xúnzǐ
Both Confucius and Xúnzǐ take for granted that contempt, in certain situations, is an appropriate and justified response for a person of virtuous character. But Xúnzǐ departs from his predecessor in his insistence on drawing clear boundaries around contempt so as to diminish its destructive and destabilizing potential. This article argues that Xúnzǐ's efforts to circumscribe contempt reflect a shift in the vision of the ritual community from one …

The Emotions in Early Chinese Philosophy
In China, the debate over the ethical status of emotions began around the fourth century bce, when early philosophers began to invoke psychological categories such as the mind (xin), human nature (xing), and emotions (qing) to explain the sources of moral authority and the foundations of knowledge about the world. Although some thinkers during this period proposed that human emotions and desires were temporary physiological disturbances in the mi…
The intelligence of emotions? Debates over the structure of moral life in early China
Bridging the Divide: Literature, Dao and the Case for Subjective Access in the Thought of Su Shi
In the 11th century in China, there was an unusual moment in which a number of philosophers, later associated with the Daoxue—or Neo-Confucian—school, confronted what they perceived as a long-standing sense of disjunction between inner, subjective reality and the structured patterns of the cosmos. One way they sought to overcome this disjunction was by positing new theories of the cosmos that focused on the underlying, shared reality behind the m…
