  • Powwows as Identity Markers

    This article examines powwows and Indian identity among the Waccamaw Sioux of North Carolina. Data are drawn from structured interviews. The results of our analyses suggest that the salience of powwows to Indian identity rests not in the authenticity of a powwow regarding local history and culture, but rather in the relationship of the activity to popular community participation.     Adherents to the zar cult in northern Sudan encounter spirits that are parallels of historically relevant figures in the known human world.     Barbados's tourist industry offers the opportunity to examine the relationship between the reproductive and the productive role of women. Power, income, and prestige measure success in the productive sphere. A stable union (marriage or consensual union) is a good predictor of higher income and more power in Barbados's tourist industry.
