  • Paleoanthropology

Open Access•Rebecca Rogers Ackermann, Rebecca Ackermann et al.•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2024

The study of human evolution, also known as palaeoanthropology, focuses on our distant and more recent human past; what shaped us as a lineage, genus, and species; and how we came to be the diverse single species we are today. However, the bulk of this research, knowledge production, and understanding has been driven by the global North to the exclusion of non‐Western scientists, despite the deep and rich fossil record of formerly colonized regio…

  • Kathu Pan 6

Wendy Black, Precious Chiwara-Maenzanise et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2023•Referencias: 28

This paper presents preliminary results from a newly excavated open-air Later Stone Age site attributed to the Wilton Industry at Kathu Pan 6 in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Basic data on the lithics, fauna (including a large ivory fragment), and ostrich eggshell (including beads) recovered during two seasons of excavation (2016–2017) are presented and this material is contextualized through comparison with neighboring sites. Spati…

  • Testing inter-observer error under a collaborative research framework for studying lithic shape variability

    Open Access•L Timbrell, Christopher Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 59

Evaluating error that arises through the aggregation of data recorded by multiple observers is a key consideration in many metric and geometric morphometric analyses of stone tool shape. One of the most common approaches involves the convergence of observers for repeat trails on the same set of artefacts: however, this is logistically and financially challenging when collaborating internationally and/or at a large scale. We present and evaluate a…

  • Variation in Middle Stone Age mandibular molar enamel-dentine junction topography at Klasies River Main Site assessed by diffeomorphic surface matching

    Open Access•Frederick E Grine, Elsa Gonzalvo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 157

  • Human manual distal phalanges from the Middle Stone Age deposits of Klasies River Main Site, Western Cape Province, South Africa

    Open Access•Frederick E Grine, Carrie S Mongle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2020•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 65

  • Upholding "good science" in human origins research

Rebecca Rogers Ackermann, Sheela Athreya et al.•PREPRINT•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

The recent publication by Chan et al (2019) entitled “Human origins in a southern African palaeo-wetland and first migrations” fails to meet scientific standards for publication in two ways. First, it neglects its scientific duty to discuss the entire body of scientific evidence around human origins, which leads to unsupportable claims. Second, it reinforces racialized power dynamics within the science of human origins. We argue that the authors …

  • Further human fossils from the Middle Stone Age deposits of Die Kelders Cave 1, Western Cape Province, South Africa

    Open Access•Frederick E Grine, C W Marean et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2017•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 59

  • Questions of khoesan continuity

    Open Access•Joel D Irish, Wendy Black et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 43

The present report follows up on the findings of previous research, including recent bioarchaeological study of well‐dated Khoesan skeletal remains, that posits long term biological continuity among the indigenous peoples of South Africa after the Pleistocene. The Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System was used to record key crown, root, and intraoral osseous nonmetric traits in six early‐through‐late Holocene samples from the Cape c…
