Effects of Experiential Learning on Students’ Transfer Skills
Experiential learning is used extensively in agriculturally related colleges and courses. There is a need to examine how to best structure meaningful learning experiences in order to best prepare the agriculture, food, and natural resources workforce. This study aimed to investigate how different modes of reflection and levels of transfer affect the development of students’ transfer skills over time in an undergraduate animal science course. A 2 …
The Effects of Reflection and Transfer on Undergraduate Animal Science Students’ Knowledge
Background: Experiential learning is commonly used in postsecondary settings, especially in undergraduate, agricultural, and laboratory courses. However, a lack of attention has been paid by educators to critical components of experiential learning. Purpose: The effects of reflection mode (peer-verbal or written journal reflection) and transfer level (same, near, or far transfer) on students’ content knowledge were examined in a postsecondary, an…
The generational divide over climate change among American evangelicals
As urgency grows to address global warming, younger generations can play a strategic role in mobilizing communities that have generally been more opposed to climate action and policy, such as political and religious conservatives in the United States. American evangelical Protestants—and white evangelicals in particular—are the largest religious group in the U.S. and also the most skeptical of climate science. There is growing interest, however, …
The Influence of Evangelical and Political Identity on Climate Change Views
The roles religion and politics play in the climate change arena have received greater attention in the past decade. Nonetheless, the relationship between religion and politics in how they shape climate change views is poorly understood, particularly among American evangelicals. This study uses data from a probability-based mail survey of residents in the political swing state of Florida, USA to examine the relationships between evangelical ident…

Effects of Stem and Response Order on Response Patterns in Satisfaction Ratings
Considerable research has examined the effect of response option order in ordinal bipolar questions such as satisfaction questions. However, no research we know of has examined the effect of the order of presentation of concepts in the question stem or whether stem order moderates response option order. In this article, we experimentally test the main and interaction effects of both stem and response option order for items in self-administered su…
Comparing Two Web/Mail Mixed-mode Contact Protocols to a Unimode Mail Survey
Recent research has shown mixed-mode surveys are advantageous for organizations to use in collecting data. Previous research explored web/mail mode effects for four-contact waves. This study explores the effect of web/mail mixed-mode systems over a series of contacts on the customer satisfaction data from the Florida Cooperative Extension Service during 2012-2013. The experimental design involved a group of clients who provided e-mail and mail co…
Who Complains About Alligators? Cognitive and Situational Factors Influence Behavior Toward Wildlife
Understanding perceptual and situational factors underlying nuisance complaints can help managers maintain carnivore populations while mitigating conflicts with people. Our study uses data from a mail survey (n = 467 complainants about nuisance alligators, and n = 669 random Florida residents) and a three-step binary logistic regression analysis to examine how general attitudes, specific beliefs, and situational factors influence the behavior of …
Combining Mail and E-Mail Contacts to Facilitate Participation in Mixed-Mode Surveys
This study examines how available e-mail addresses can be incorporated into mixed-mode procedures for surveys of the public, especially client groups. Cooperative Extension Service clients provide the basis for analyzing how implementation procedures affect response rates and substantive findings. These clients form three strata based on contact information provided: postal address only, e-mail only, and both. From clients who provided mail and e…
Preventing Eye Injuries Among Citrus Harvesters: The Community Health Worker Model
Objectives. Although eye injuries are common among citrus harvesters, the proportion of workers using protective eyewear has been negligible. We focused on adoption of worker-tested safety glasses with and without the presence and activities of trained peer-worker role models on harvesting crews. Methods. Observation of 13 citrus harvesting crews established baseline use of safety eyewear. Nine crews subsequently were assigned a peer worker to mo…
Effects of Token Financial Incentives on Response Rates and Item Nonresponse for Mail Surveys
Self-administered mail questionnaire surveys are commonly used by human dimensions of wildlife researchers, but nonresponse error and item nonresponse can decrease questionnaire data quality. By using token financial incentives, researchers can increase response rates and reduce error. We surveyed two random samples of 500 Georgia cattle ranchers to conduct an incentive experiment by giving one group a $1 Jefferson coin and the other nothing. The…
The Effects of Gender Role Conflict on Adolescent and Emerging Adult Male Resiliency
This study examines gender role conflict in adolescent and emerging adult males and how it affects their resilience, or their ability to “bounce back” from adverse circumstances. Specifically, the study investigated the effects of the different patterns of gender role conflict on male adolescent/emerging adult resilience. Results suggest a complex relationship between male gender role conflict and resilience in this sample. Multiple regression mo…
The Power of Community
While formally and informally recognized as being central to community action, the research and theoretical literature provide little insight into the processes behind the emergence of community power. When power is explored, it is usually presented in a macro context where a culmination of numerous efforts results in a critical stage leading to a more equitable distribution of power. Far less often is the micro level considered. At the latter le…
After the Florida Net Ban: The Impacts on Commercial Fishing Families
In November 1994, Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment that outlawed commercial entanglement nets of more than 500 square feet in state waters. The "net ban" affected an estimated 1500 fishers and their families. This article reviews some of the family impacts of the net ban, based on data collected from a group of commercial fishing families who participated in a study of family stress and coping before the net ban and agreed to be…
The Influence of Family and Community Social Capital on Educational Achievement
It is increasingly recognized that families and communities are important in helping youths develop the knowledge and skills they need to obtain technologically sophisticated jobs, which are an emerging part of the global economy. In this paper we adopt social capital as a framework for examining the influence of family and community on promoting educational achievement among public school students. We explore more fully the role of community soc…
