Justifying and Negotiating Responses to the Radical Right
How did the Swedish labour movement – the Social Democratic Party (SAP) and the blue-collar union confederation, Landsorganisationen i Sverige (LO) – respond to the rise of the radical right-wing party (RRP) the Sweden Democrats (SD) between 2007 and 2018? To address this question, we conduct a chronological, qualitative analysis of textual sources to analyse not only the external responses but also the intra-organizational process that accompani…
From governmental success to governmental breakdown
The 2018 election made it clear the Swedish politics of migration no longer was an outlier in comparative European perspective. In this contribution, we analyse some of the reasons behind this development, which trace back a decade earlier We focus on the troubled relationship the centre-right has had with the issue of immigration and draw attention to two critical junctures in order to explain it. First, the entry of a populist radical party to …
Introduction
This symposium probes contemporary classifications of the “far-right”, “populist radical right” and “radical right” variety. It also considers whether there is a need to look beyond socio-economic factors to explain the upward trajectory such parties experienced in recent years. The symposium thus connects to ongoing debates regarding the nature of this party family (or families) and to previous accounts of their successes across Western Europe

Getting the Balance Right? Party Competition on Immigration and Conflicting Ideological ‘Pulls’
Will a plurality of cleavages ‘pull’ parties in different directions? Are these strains particularly troublesome when competing on issues that lack an obvious dimensional fit? Are some parties more likely than others to experience these tensions? And does it matter? While the essence of the party‐political space has received substantial coverage, less attention is paid to the effects that multidimensionality may have on issue competition. Compari…

Political Parties and ‘the Immigration Issue
Why is ‘the immigration issue’ rarely polemical for the Swedish mainstream when it divides parties across Europe? Several factors suggest fertile ground for conflict, yet parties hesitate to capitalise on anti-immigration cues. Based on interviews with Swedish MPs, the article discusses two interlinked issues. First, immigration crystallises conflicting ideological streams: market liberalism vs. value conservatism (for the centre-right) and inter…
Turkish Organizations in Europe
The purpose of this article is threefold: to identify opportunities and constraints for migrants in participating in their host society; to further explore variance in formal political participation; and to assess how different citizenship policies give rise to different types of participation and different targets for claims‐making. The article first discusses how different understandings of citizenship and implementations of citizenship policy …
Going different ways? Right-wing parties and the immigrant issue in Denmark and Sweden
This contribution analyses centre-right parties' attitudes and positions on immigration and integration in Denmark and Sweden. Despite the two countries being socio-economically and culturally similar, there are some significant political and structural differences which help to explain why immigration has played a much more prominent role in Danish politics compared to Swedish politics. The article argues that this can be explained with referenc…
One Size Fits All? European Citizenship, National Citizenship Policies and Integration Requirements
This article considers what is meant by the idea of ‘European citizenship’ and addresses the issue of converging citizenship policies. By comparing a number of data sets, the degree to which convergence is taking place is assessed. The article suggests that EU member states are, to a certain extent, harmonising. However, this is effected not so much through formal citizenship regulation (such as the rules on dual nationality), but rather through …
Getting Ethnic Questions on the Agenda
The purpose of this article is twofold: firstly, to examine party formation as an option for social movements; secondly, to explore in more detail the reasons and conditions as to why a party with an explicit ethnic agenda and with an aim to represent various migrant communities emerged in the Swedish but not in the Dutch context. The article argues that this type of mobilization should be viewed as a strategy adopted by social movements rather t…

Migration Policies and Political Participation
Comparing differences in migrant political participation, the author discusses the influence that institutions have on opportunities and constraints for migrants' political engagement. The book adopts
Civil society, migrant organisations and political parties
This article deals with the role of migrant associations in civil society and the relationship they have with other societal actors. Firstly, ideas and rationales behind civil society are discussed. An ‘ideal model’ of organisations' features is elaborated, and migrant associations in the Swedish context are then compared to this matrix. Secondly, the role and relevance of these associations are discussed with reference to the structural opportun…
