    ZEN AND POPULAR DEPICTIONS OF DARUMA In the tradition and lore of Buddhism in East Asia a very conspicuous figure is Bodhidharma, an immigrant Indian monk credited with having begun the development of Ch'an * (Zen) Buddhism in China in the sixth century.
