  • The drivers of multilevel governance as a mode of policymaking: The case of asylum-seekers' reception in Italy

Open Access•Tiziana Caponio, Andrea Pettrachin et al.•ARTICLE•Italian Political Science…•2025•References: 31

This article analyses modes of policymaking related to asylum-seekers' reception in Italy and other European Union (EU) countries during the decade of the so-called 2015 asylum crisis. It shows that, while most EU countries experienced shifts towards more hierarchical modes of policymaking on asylum, Italy pursued a unique experience of multilevel governance (MLG) between 2014 and 2016, which was then dismantled in 2017. By looking at this MLG ex…

  • Migration Control Logics and Strategies in Europe: A North-South Comparison

Open Access•Claudia Finotelli, Irene Ponzo•BOOK•Migration Control Logics and…•2023

This open access book looks at migration control logics and strategies in Europe and questions existence of a North-South divide in immigration policies

  • Relational and reputational resources in the governance of top-down asylum seekers’ reception in Italian rural areas

Tiziana Caponio, Davide Donatiello et al.•ARTICLE•Territory Politics Governance•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 12

The dramatic increase in the number of forced migrants and asylum seekers in Europe in the past decade, and the national redistribution policies aimed at diffusing the ‘burden’ of reception across national territories, have led mayors in small towns in rural areas to face the challenges of reception in their communities. In this study, we analyse how this challenge was dealt with in three mountain valleys in the Alpine area of Turin, in the North…

  • The Great Recession as a ‘stress test’ of migrant incorporation in Europe. Are Southern European countries really lame ducks

    Open Access•Irene Ponzo•ARTICLE•Migration Studies•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 19

Southern European countries are generally portrayed as lame ducks when it comes to migrant integration. In this article, I will analyse some of the reasons that have led to this outcome including potential biases in migration studies. I argue that Southern European countries in fact hold their own specific ways of incorporating migrants which may be equally or even more positive than those of older immigration countries. At the same time, I maint…

  • Modes of migrant incorporation in contexts of socio-economic downward mobility

    Irene Ponzo•ARTICLE•New Community•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 21

In this contribution I deal with two weaknesses of integration theories which have become particularly evident since the deterioration of migrants’ and natives’ conditions produced by the economic crisis that began in 2008. The first weakness that I will address is the tendency to establish a conceptually tight relationship between integration and migrants’ upward socio-economic mobility. The second can be identified in the almost exclusive focus…

  • Integration in times of economic decline. Migrant inclusion in Southern European societies: Trends and theoretical implications

    Claudia Finotelli, Irene Ponzo•ARTICLE•New Community•2017•Cited by: 19•References: 22

Despite the large amount of literature on migrants' integration, little is known about integration in times of economic decline. The aim of this Special Issue is to contribute to filling this research gap by exploring the nexus between the Great Recession that began in 2008 and integration processes. To this end, we regard Southern European countries as an observatory of crucial relevance because of their harsh experience of the crisis and common…
