  • Two decades of feminist thought - and beyond

    Mal Leicester•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2001

This paper reflects on feminist achievements in adult education during the last twenty years. The 1980s was a crucial period, putting gender on the agenda. Research on women and post-school education was initiated, women's studies were established and the prevalence of structural discrimination was recognised. Some comparisons with the development of anti-racist education are made. In the 1990s feminists increasingly recognised women's ‘ways of k…

  • Post-postmodernism and continuing education

    Mal Leicester•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Postmodernism is currently influentialin educational theorising and has become a pervasive topic in the education literature. Definitions of postmodernism and practical prescriptions are said to be incompatible with a postmodern perspective (e.g. Usher and Edwards 1994). They are seldom offered. Nevertheless, in this paper I attempt to explore what is meant by postmodernism, highlighting the epistemological dimensions, and seek to develop a less …

  • Disability Voice: Educational experience and disability

    Mal Leicester, Tessa Lovell•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•1997•Cited by: 2

Lightly structured, in-depth interviews of 30 adults with disabilities and parents of disabled children, probing their educational experiences, yielded rich autobiographical data. The interview transcripts were analysed in terms of the significant patterns of experience which emerged. That particular experiences were shared was clear from frequency of mention, and our claim that these were significant experiences is based on both their subjective…

  • Equal Opportunities In Education: A coherent, rational and moral concern

    Open Access•Mal Leicester•ARTICLE•Journal of Philosophy of Education•1996

This paper is a response to papers by Wilson, Burwood and White concerning equal opportunities as an educational ideal. I seek to legitimate this ideal, in contrast to these earlier attempts to persuade us that it is incoherent, unreasonable or misguided. I argue that, given the social context in which the term is used, it is meaningful and represents rational and praiseworthy goals. I identify four aspects of ‘equal opportunities’ and conclude t…

  • Special Children, Integration and Moral Education

    Open Access•Mal Leicester•ARTICLE•Children & Society•1994

This paper explores issues concerning the integration of children with disabilities into mainstream schools and draws out the implications of the discussions for moral education. Social and personal theories of disability are reconciled to provide a basis for a moral education which bridges ‘alternative’ moral traditions. I argue that successful integration requires a moral education for teachers and pupils which encourages the development of bot…

  • Anti-racist post-initial education: Reform after the Act

Mal Leicester, John Osgood Field et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•1990•References: 2

There has been much discussion about what the Education Reform Act (ERA) means for racial equality in schools. This article explores the Act's consequences for post‐initial education and training, including its implications for anti‐racist education, and reflects on possible anti‐racist responses and strategies to it. Though broadly inequalitarian, ERA's provisions unwittingly contain some progressive potential, both for further education and loc…
