Relative Adiposity and Body Dissatisfaction in Young Adult Sexual Minority Women
The purpose of this study was to examine potential differences in body mass index (BMI), relative adiposity (%Fat), and body dissatisfaction (BD) between heterosexual (HSW) and sexual minority women (SMW). Young adult women (n = 84; 23.8% SMW; 21.9 ± 3.8 years) were included in our analysis. %Fat was assessed using a four-compartment model. BD was assessed using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), the BD subscale of the Eating Disorders Inventory…
Acute Responses to High-Intensity Back Squats with Bilateral Blood Flow Restriction
This study examined the acute effects of high-intensity resistance exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) on performance and fatigue, metabolic stress, and markers of inflammation (interleukin-6 (IL-6)), muscle damage (myoglobin), angiogenesis (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)). Thirteen resistance-trained participants (four female, 24.8 ± 4.7 years) performed four sets of barbell back-squats (75% 1RM) to failure under two conditions…
Evaluation of Skinfold Techniques in People with Down Syndrome
The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of skinfold thickness (SFT) measurements for the estimation of %Fat when compared to dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). The secondary aim was to develop a new SFT-based body fat equation (SFT NICKERSON ). SFT-based %Fat was estimated using a body fat equation from González-Agüero (SFT G-A ) and body density conversion formulas from Siri (SFT SIR…
Hemodynamic Responses to Resistance Exercise with Blood Flow Restriction Using a Practical Method Versus a Traditional Cuff-Inflation System
BTF BFR causes a more exaggerated decrease in arterial blood flow as well as muscular power when compared to traditional TRA BFR at 50% of LOP
Utilizing a Novel 2D Image Processing System for Relating Body Composition Metrics to Performance in Collegiate Female Rowers
The purpose of this study was to determine if rowing performance was associated with fat mass (FM) or fat-free mass (FFM) measured using a novel 2D digital image analysis system. Nineteen female rowers (ages = 20.3 ± 1.0 years, weight = 73.8 ± 8.3 kg, height = 172.7 ± 4.7 cm) participated in this study. FM and FFM were estimated with a smartphone application that uses an automated 2D image analysis program. Rowing performance was measured using a…
Inter- and Intra-Day Comparisons of Smartphone-Derived Heart Rate Variability across Resistance Training Overload and Taper Microcycles
The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine if smartphone-derived heart rate variability (HRV) could detect changes in training load during an overload microcycle and taper, and (2) to determine the reliability of HRV measured in the morning and measured immediately prior to the testing session. Twelve powerlifters (male = 10, female = 2) completed a 3-week resistance training program consisting of an introduction microcycle, overload micro…
Importance of Agility Performance in Professional Futsal Players; Reliability and Applicability of Newly Developed Testing Protocols
The purpose of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-testing reliability of newly developed tests of the change of direction speed (CODS) and reactive agility (RAG) in competitive futsal players. Additionally, the developed tests were evaluated for their validity with regard to the differentiation of two performance-levels. Thirty-two professional male futsal players (age = 26.22 ± 5.22 years; body height = 182.13 ± 5.99 cm, body mass …
