When this book landed on my desk, I was quite excited: the economic analysis of regulation in Japan continues to be a gap in the English-language literature on Japan. While we can draw on …

  • Sunshine and Suicides in Japan

    Ulrike Schaede•ARTICLE•Contemporary Japan•2013•References: 2

This paper investigates how exposure to sunshine affects the suicide rate in Japan, especially in relation to economic variables. Using prefecturebased data on socioeconomic variables for the years 1993–2009, the paper confirms existing research in finding a significant correlation between suicides and unemployment, for both men and women. The interaction between sunshine and unemployment is also significant, and further analysis reveals that une…

  • Cooperative Capitalism

    Ulrike Schaede, Mark Tilton•BOOK•Cooperative capitalism•2000

In an extensive study of 'post-development' Japan, Ulrike Schaede argues that, contrary to what many have suggested, the reduced role of government regulation may not result in more open markets. Instead, as has happened throughout Japanese history, deregulation and the recession of t…

  • The introduction of commercial paper — a case study in the liberalisation of the Japanese financial markets

    Ulrike Schaede•ARTICLE•Japan Forum•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The CP market was introduced in Japan because there was felt to be a need to offer corporate entities a means of raising funds in the open market other than through gensaki. Secondly, the financial authorities regarded it to be an appropriate step in reaction to the recent developments in international finance. A CP is a promissory note that is subject to the Law on Bills. Both banks and securities companies are allowed to engage as dealers on th…
