  • Watching Televised Counter-Stereotypes Alone or with Mom

    Helene Laporte, Steven Eggermont•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2025•References: 61

Despite the dominant presence of traditional gender portrayals on television, there is a growing effort to incorporate more diverse gender representations, including in youth television series. The impact of such counter-stereotypical portrayals on preadolescents' gender attitudes and beliefs remains largely unexplored. This mixed-design experimental study among 75 mother-child dyads (Mage child = 10.69, SD = 1.37) examined the effects of watchin…

  • Educational television in school and Flemish preadolescents’ gender attitudes and beliefs

Helene Laporte•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2024

Scholars have recently begun to explore the potential of educational media featuring counter-stereotypes in changing gender attitudes and beliefs, but so far experimental studies simulating interventions are lacking and preadolescents are understudied as target group. Further exploration of this research field is highly needed. In this mixed-design experimental study among 271 preadolescents (Mage = 10.34, SD = .77), we therefore examine the impa…

  • Exposure to Sexually Explicit Internet Material in Adolescence and Unwanted Sexual Behavior in Emerging Adulthood

Helene Laporte, Laurens Vangeel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Media Psychology…•2024

This longitudinal study examines long-term associations between the use of sexually explicit internet material (SEIM) during adolescence and engagement in unwanted sexual behaviors in emerging adulthood. Drawing on a four-wave panel study among 377 participants (aged 18–24, 44.3% male), using logistic regression analysis, we found that SEIM use during adolescence predicted a higher odds of having sexually touched a stranger and of having insisted…

  • The Role of Pubertal Timing and Heterosocial Involvement in Early Adolescents’ Media Internalization

Open Access•Ann Rousseau, Helene Laporte et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2020•References: 6

The present three-wave panel study ( N = 968, [Formula: see text] = 11.30, SD = 1.06) examines how developmental factors—pubertal timing and heterosocial involvement (i.e., one’s involvement in cross-sex activities)—influence early adolescents’ level of media internalization. We hypothesized that early pubertal timing positively moderates the association between sexualizing magazine reading and media internalization. Next, we argued that increase…
