Factors associated with married adolescent girls’ and young women’s participation in decision-making regarding sexual and reproductive health in Tanzania
BACKGROUND: Married adolescent girls and young women's (AGYW) participation in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) decision-making is a critical factor for their overall health and well-being. High adolescent fertility rates and disparities in healthcare decision-making participation highlight a significant gap in understanding the dynamics that influence AGYW's involvement in SRH decisions. Therefore, this study aimed to address this gap by exa…
Implementation fidelity of tuberculosis screening for Diabetes mellitus patients among healthcare providers offering diabetes services in Ubungo District, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Globally, the risk of acquiring Tuberculosis (TB) among Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients is three times higher than in the general population. Patients with DM not only have a high risk of getting TB disease but also have poor treatment outcomes. Despite the National TB guideline recommending TB screening among DM patients, adherence remains low. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the provider-level implementation fidelity (IF) and factors asso…
Socioeconomic and national disparities in disability distribution among population in five East African countries
This study highlighted a significant disability prevalence in EACs. Its associated factors included female gender, poorer economic households, rural areas and separation. There was interaction of age and education level on influencing disability. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions and further research into underlying mechanisms to improve support systems for vulnerable populations
Generalized and Covid-19 related anxiety among Tanzanian adolescents with HIV and association with HIV outcomes during the Covid-19 pandemic
Low levels of generalized and COVID-19 related anxiety were reported among Tanzanian AWH. Scaling up integrated screening and management of GAD into HIV care for AWH could improve VLS among this population
Community perspectives of Ebola Viral Disease in high-risk transmission border regions of Tanzania
The high-risk regions of Tanzania had a high level of awareness and perceived susceptibility to EVD, coupled with varying degrees of misperception about the etiology and its transmission. To improve community perspectives and preparedness in the case of an outbreak, there is a need for ongoing risk communication and participation in EVD prevention and responses
If I die for touching him, let me die”
Cultural practices may escalate EVD transmission as identified in the study settings. As such, Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) activities should be interventionist in transforming cultural practices that may escalate the spread of EVD as part of preparedness, prevention, and control efforts in the event of an outbreak
Facilitators for and Barriers to the Implementation of Performance Accountability Mechanisms for Quality Improvement in the Delivery of Maternal Health Services in a District Hospital in Pwani Region,…
Tanzania experiences a burden of maternal mortality and morbidity. Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in Tanzania
Although gender mainstreaming has been long recognized as a strategy for addressing gender inequalities and associated negative health outcomes; its implementation has remained a challenge, even in the area of prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Despite recognition of gender in Tanzania's political arena and prioritization of PMTCT by the health sector, there is very little information on how well gender has been mainstream…
Intimate partner violence and challenges facing women living with HIV/Aids in accessing antiretroviral treatment at Singida Regional Hospital, central Tanzania
BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global public health problem. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by HIV/AIDS in the world. Globally, and in Tanzania in particular, women are more affected by HIV/AIDS than men. Tanzania has been reported to be among the countries with the highest burden of intimate partner violence (IPV). OBJECTIVE: This paper, therefore, presents and discusses findings on barriers (and opportunities) for instituting disease prevention and health promotion activities. DESIGN: The study was conducted in Kongwa District, Tanzania, using an explorative case study approach. Data were collected through …
Gender context of sexual violence and HIV sexual risk behaviors among married women in Iringa Region, Tanzania
BackgroundThere is a dearth of empirical research illuminating possible connections between gender imbalances and sexual violence among married women in Tanzania. There is a need to generate in-depth information on the connectivity between gender imbalances (asymmetrical resource ownership, sexual decision making, roles, and norms) and sexual violence plus associated HIV risky sexual behavior among married women.DesignThis paper is based on a qua…
Participation in health planning in a decentralised health system
Tanzania introduced the decentralisation of its health systems in the 1990s in order to provide opportunities for community participation in health planning. Health facility governing committees (HFGCs) were then established to provide room for communities to participate in the management of health service delivery. The objective of this study was to explore the challenges and benefits for the participation of HFGCs in health planning in a decent…
Masculine attitudes of superiority deter men from accessing antiretroviral therapy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
BACKGROUND: This article presents part of the findings from a larger study that sought to assess the role that gender relations play in influencing equity regarding access and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Review of the literature has indicated that, in Southern and Eastern Africa, fewer men than women have been accessing ART, and the former start using ART late, after HIV has already been allowed to advance. The main causes for this…
Challenges to the implementation of health sector decentralization in Tanzania
BACKGROUND: During the 1990s, the government of Tanzania introduced the decentralization by devolution (D by D) approach involving the transfer of functions, power and authority from the centre to the local government authorities (LGAs) to improve the delivery of public goods and services, including health services. OBJECTIVE: This article examines and documents the experiences facing the implementation of decentralization of health services from…
“Being faithful” in a sexual relationship
Little is known about what adolescents think about faithfulness and partner reduction for HIV prevention (the "B" in the ABC HIV prevention behavior change strategy), including how they understand its implementation within relationships. In addition, because adolescents face the twin threats of HIV and unintended pregnancy, it is important to understand how adolescents may integrate their thinking on pregnancy prevention if they are using faithfu…
