    Open Access•Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•Semen•2026

    Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•La Revue Nouvelle•2026

  • Gender-inclusive speaking

Open Access•Marie Flesch, Julie Abbou et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2026

This contribution presents the first quantitative study of gender-inclusive language in spoken French, based on a corpus of sociolinguistic interviews conducted in Montreal, Paris, and Marseille with feminist and queer activists. Focusing on noun phrases referring to human beings, we quantify the proportion of generic masculines in the corpus and analyze the various strategies used by the speakers to avoid them. Results show that the overall rate…

  • Conceptual Spaces for Conceptual Engineering? Feminism as a Case Study

Open Access•Lina Bendifallah, Julie Abbou et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Philosophy and Psychology•2025

Recently, there has been much research into conceptual engineering in connection with feminist inquiry and activism, most notably involving gender issues, but also sexism and misogyny. Our paper contributes to this research by explicating, in a principled manner, a series of other concepts important for feminist research and activism, to wit, feminist political identity terms. More specifically, we show how the popular Conceptual Spaces Framework…

  • Analyzing linguistic variation using discursive worlds

Open Access•Heather Burnett, Julie Abbou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociolinguistics•2024•References: 39

Researchers in variationist sociolinguistics have long sought to develop social measures that are more sophisticated than demographic categories such as age, gender, and social class, while still being useful for quantitative analysis. This paper presents one such new measure: discursive worlds. For each speaker in a corpus, their discursive world is operationalized through compiling a list of specific referents cited in their interview. These li…

  • Inclusive writing

    Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This article documents the linguistic, disciplinary, geographical and ideological circulation of the notion of ‘inclusive writing/d’écriture inclusive’ in order to understand the French controversy surrounding the term. The article shows that North American Protestant feminist theologists first spread the expression in the 1970s. The expression then circulated in feminist circles in English and French, in Europe and North America, but also in the…

  • Les figurines de Tarse. Partie II. Étude technique

    Open Access•Clara Bernard, Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•Pallas•2023

The material study of a corpus of twenty-two figurines from Tarsus was carried out in parallel with analyses of terracotta and polychromy. It was based on systematic observations under visible light and raking light, as well as on ultraviolet induced fluorescence photography and infrared reflectography. The technical gestures detected are interesting: some of them seem to be specific to Tarsus, whereas others could perhaps provide us with clues a…

    Open Access•Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•Recherches féministes•2020

  • Double gender marking in French

Julie Abbou•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Language Planning•2011•Cited by: 13

Linguistic antisexism is different from the institutional feminization of language. It involves practices of double gender marking which work to avoid the gender dichotomy. Working on a French written corpus, this paper will examine the forms of double gender marking, looking at typographic, morphosyntactical and rhetorical levels; then, it will analyse this gender-related practice as a use of language as a political tool. Those who use double ge…
