  • Community Resilience

James Kendra, Lauren Clay et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2021

The science of resilience presents the opportunity to explain how natural, social, and physical systems interact to impact community functioning and well-being postdisaster. This paper describes the development and theoretical foundation of a comprehensive conceptual model, presenting a shift from the usual thinking about resilience to construe resilience more precisely as the trajectory of postdisaster recovery, with community functioning and we…

  • A Computational Study of the Station Nightclub Fire Accounting for Social Relationships

    Open Access•Sherif El‐tawil, Sherif El-Tawil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2017

Using agent-based modeling, this study presents the results of a computational study of social relationships among more than four hundreds evacuees in The Station Nightclub building in Rhode Island. The fire occurred on the night of February , and resulted in fatalities. A er summarizing and calibrating the computational method used, parametric studies are conducted to quantitatively investigate the influences of the presence of social relationsh…

  • Search and rescue in collapsed structures

    Open Access•Sherif El‐tawil, B E Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 23

This paper discusses the social science and engineering dimensions of search and rescue (SAR) in collapsed buildings. First, existing information is presented on factors that influence the behaviour of trapped victims, particularly human, physical, socioeconomic and circumstantial factors. Trapped victims are most often discussed in the context of structural collapse and injuries sustained. Most studies in this area focus on earthquakes as the ty…

  • Elderly Mexican Americans

    Open Access•Letitia T Alston, B E Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Information from the 1976 Survey of Income and Education are used to explore nativity differences in the levels of functional impairment and access to some kinds of medical resources among elderly Mexican Americans. The data indicate that foreign-born status is weakly associated with greater functional disability. It is more strongly associated with some differences in access to medical resources. Some implications for policy and long-term care a…
