Adapting and Scaling-up Peer Navigators to Targeted Populations of Street-Involved Youth in Kenya and Canada to Increase Engagement in HIV Prevention, Testing, and Treatment
Street-involved youth (SIY), particularly those who identify as 2-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other sexual and gender diverse identities (2SLGBTQ+), are among key populations disproportionately affected by HIV. We adapted and scaled-up a Peer Navigator intervention to targeted populations of SIY in six sites across Kenya (Eldoret, Huruma, Kitale) and Canada (London, Toronto, Vancouver), with the aim of increasing engage…
There's a lot of DIY joy
In this article, we reflect on experiences of gender euphoria and do-it-yourself (DIY) queer joy during a collage-making workshop with an intergenerational group of 2SLGBTQIA+ participants and researchers. The workshop is part of a larger participatory visual research project called Pride/Swell±an initiative that has been bringing together queer and trans people from across Atlantic Canada to make art since 2020. During an in-person workshop with…
Solidarity Through Mail-Based Participatory Visual Research
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a logistical problem to our normal ways of engaging in participatory visual research. Our in-person art, activism and archiving with 2SLGBTQ+ Atlantic Canadian youth pivoted to use distanced engagement strategies that met the demands of the pandemic. We sought to create networks of solidarity while we were apart. Monthly, over the course of a year, we mailed out themed packages of art supplies and directions to fifty-f…
Using scenario videos with Theatre Testing method to adapt a peer navigation model to improve street-connected youth's access to HIV care in Kenya and Canada
Theatre testing (TT) method demonstrates whole or portions of an evidence-based intervention to stakeholders to elicit feedback on context-specific adaptations and future implementation. The Peer Navigator Project (PNP) studied the adaptation and implementation of Peer Navigators in five urban sites to increase street-connected youth (SCY) access to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment in Canada and Kenya. TT was used with SCY, healthcare provi…
Barriers to and facilitators of accessing HIV services for street-involved youth in Canada and Kenya
Intersectional stigma was a critical barrier in all sites, and policies and programs that foster welcoming environments for youth from diverse backgrounds and living circumstances may be better able to respond to the HIV service needs of this high risk population. Social support and navigation services were reported to facilitate access to HIV services in all sites
Staying safe
Celling Sex was a community-based participatory research project that used a strengths-based approach to explore the agentic harm reduction practices employed by young women who trade sex and learn about their experience accessing health and social services. Fifteen racially diverse young women participated in interviews. They described how they tried to stay safe and advice for others. Each participant also individually made a brief digital vide…
Quilted cellphilm method
The use of participatory visual methods and integration of cellphone technology is expanding in global public health research. Cellphilm method capitalises on these trends by inviting participants to use mobile devices to create short videos about health topics. This paper presents the quilted cellphilm method, which supports the participation of stigmatised populations to engage in research. We present the method with reference to the Celling Se…
Coproducing digital archives with 2SLGBTQ+ Atlantic Canadian youth amidst the Covid-19 pandemic
Purpose The authors explore the coproduction of a digital archive with 50 2SLGBTQ+ youth across Atlantic Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to catalyze broader public participation in understanding 2SLGBTQ+ youth-led activism in this place and time through art production. Design/methodology/approach Through a mail-based participatory visual research project and an examination of collage, zines and DIY facemasks, the authors highlight ho…
Participatory visual methods and school-based responses to HIV in rural South Africa
This paper explores students’, preservice teachers’ and inservice teachers’ perceptions of the contributions and challenges of using participatory visual methodologies (PVM) to enhance HIV education in rural schools. Drawing on findings from three research projects conducted in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, four positive contributions are identified: 1) novelty, fun and engagement; 2) amplifying youth voices; 3) the facilitation of teachers’ refle…
Two years later
South Africa continues to struggle with the world's highest HIV rates, and the country's young people are amongst those most severely affected by this epidemic. The education sector, and especially teachers, are situated to be leaders in the national response and can provide emotional support as well as information on gender, sexuality, and HIV and AIDS. This article explores preservice teachers' experiences two years after participating in the Y…
‘Use Condoms for Safe Sex!’ Youth-led video making and sex education
Situated at the intersection between child-led visual methods and sex education, this paper focuses on the potential of youth-led video making to enable young people to develop guiding principles to inform their own sexual behaviour. It draws on findings from a video-making project carried out with a group of South African young people, which engaged them in identifying and tackling critical issues of HIV and AIDS. By analysing one of the youth-g…
Using cellphones in participatory visual research to address gender-based violence in and around rural South African schools
There is a critical need to address gender-based violence (GBV) against young women in South African schools. This article reflects on the process of facilitating a participatory visual research workshop with a group of high school learners in rural KwaZulu-Natal to interrogate how research can act as intervention in the lives of research participants and communities. The participants used cellphones to make short videos - or cellphilms - on how …
