Late Ottoman Gaza: An Eastern Mediterranean Hub in Transformation
Following the unprecedented war crimes perpetrated by both sides in the conflict since late 2023, few places have provoked as heated reactions at their mere mention as the city and region of Gaza. However, whatever visions of Gaza’s future commentators conveyed in the past months—from total victory and via total destruction to Donald Trump’s “Riviera of the Middle East”—they mostly have in common that they consider the area a tabula rasa, a place…
The “veins and arteries of the country” Imagined and actual exclusion from railway connectivity in Bulgaria, 1878–1908
The Bulgarian Principality, established in 1878, witnessed serious contentions over railway accessibility. The central planning state, through its de facto practices of catering to local interests, polarised regions contending against one another. It also witnessed strife between rich and poor articulated in class-based party politics as well as intra-elite struggles between traditional and new elites, fought out in the sphere of cultural capital…

Port Cities of the Eastern Mediterranean: Urban Culture in the Late Ottoman Empire
Eastern Mediterranean port cities, such as Constantinople, Smyrna, and Salonica, have long been sites of fascination. Known for their vibrant and diverse populations, the dynamism of their economic and cultural exchanges, and their form of relatively peaceful co-existence in a turbulent age, many would label them as models of cosmopolitanism. In this study, Malte Fuhrmann examines changes in the histories of space, consumption, and identities in …

Western Perversions’ at the Threshold of Felicity: The European Prostitutes of Galata‐Pera (1870–1915)
Istanbul in the late nineteenth century grew to be a hub of the so‐called “white slave trade”, the trafficking of women predominantly from the Eastern Habsburg provinces to brothels from South America to East Asia. As a strong movement to suppress this trafficking grew in Europe, the Habsburg authorities’ incapability to suppress the trade endangered Austria‐Hungary’s standing in the Eastern Question, that is, its attempt to play a significant ro…

Anatolia as a site of German colonial desire and national re-awakenings
Anatolia played an important role in German nineteenth-century colonial aspirations that was subsequently blacked out in both the Federal Republic of Germany and the Turkish Republic, due to their political re-orientation. To recreate the important role that Anatolia played in German colonialism, classic approaches to the studies of imperialism, such as tracing government actions through official documentation, are insufficient. This approach mus…
Cosmopolitan imperialists and the ottoman port cities. Conflicting logics in the urban social fabric
