  • Sod, Straw, Logs, and Mud

    Open Access•Sandra Rollings-Magnusson•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2015

Hundreds of thousands of individuals and their families made the western prairie region their home during the Canadian homesteading era. In order to build their first homes, many had to rely on the natural materials that were readily at hand on their quarter section. As such, homes made of logs chinked with mud and straw were common as were residences that were made of sod. Using results obtained from a survey that was administered in the 1950s t…

    Open Access•Sandra Rollings-Magnusson•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2014

In the mid-1950s, the Saskatchewan Archives Board distributed a survey to those individuals who had pioneered in the province between 1876 and 1914. The purpose of this survey was to identify the reasons why individuals felt compelled to migrate or immigrate to Canada, how their friends and family members felt about their decision to move, the various means of transportation they used to travel to Saskatchewan, and the family members, friends, or…

    Open Access•Sandra Rollings-Magnusson•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2008•References: 3

Various studies conducted over the past three decades have highlighted the social, political, and economic impact that women homesteaders had on the western prairie region. Their involvement on the family homestead, whether taking part in subsistence and domestic chores or as workers in the fields, was a necessary aspect of the development and success of family farming and an agriculture-based economy in Western Canada. This paper reveals details…

  • Rejoinder to the Comments of Dr. Åke Blomqvist

    Sandra Rollings-Magnusson•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2001

The commentary prepared by Dr. Blomqvist provides a logical discussion of the major counterarguments that may be raised in response to the points made in our paper. However, it is suggested that, while Blomqvist's comments raise a number of interesting points for discussion, they too readily discount the incentive effect that Emission Reduction Unit (ERU) sales in the international market would have on business closures. Further, he gives inadequ…

  • The Kyoto Protocol

    Sandra Rollings-Magnusson, Robert C Magnusson•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2000•Cited by: 1

The Kyoto Protocol is an important and necessary step toward protecting the global environment. However, analysis reveals problems that could hamper the effectiveness of this treaty. Technical deficiencies, ambiguities, and inconsistencies exist in the legal text. In addition, from the Canadian perspective, an inequitable distribution of the costs of environmental enhancement may occur despite design efforts that attempted to achieve fairness and…
