Caste, Space, and Retail Religiosity in Tamil Toronto
This paper is focused on ritually organized caste practices in the Canadian Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora. It describes how Sri Lankan Tamils in Toronto, Canada, who in some ways have tried to turn their backs on caste (especially in the second and third generations), nonetheless use caste as a sort of marketing “brand” in an increasingly competitive Hindu temple “market”. This paper is animated by an underlying concern with how spatial aspects of Sr…

Abiding by Sri Lanka Qadri Ismail's way
Qadri Ismail's book, Abiding by Sri Lanka: On Peace, Place, and Postcoloniality (2005) suggests that literary theory might help Sri Lankans re-imagine the colonial social categories and histories that underwrite their long-running conflict. Ismail also argues that the social sciences (particularly anthropology) and history fail Sri Lanka. They fail either because, like anthropology, their colonial origins render them epistemologically unable to '…

Tamilnet.com
In this essay I argue that Tamilnet.com, an Internet news agency put together by a group of Sri Lankan Tamils to address the Tamil diaspora and influence English-speaking elites, subverted international news coverage during Sri Lanka's civil war by making "ironic" use of the discursive styles of journalism and anthropology. I also claim that this constituted a particular form of autoethnographic popular anthropology that challenged professional a…

Ethnography as Learning
Powerful critiques of anthropology over the last twenty years have sometimes questioned whether ethnography should continue as a central practice for cultural anthropology. Epistemologically, ethnography has made claims to objectivity that ring hollow upon close examination. Politically, ethnography has often presumed a definitional authority that recreates power dynamics that recall anthropology's colonial past. Indeed, some critics have suggest…
