  • Waste Management and Waste Disposal Detected by Combination of Analytical Methods: Late Bronze Age Březnice Settlement Site (South Bohemia)

    Open Access•Tereza Šálková, Kristýna Budilová et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025•References: 18

Waste disposal processes and landfill management are crucial subjects in the field of settlement archaeology. Our study is focused on understanding the processes that are connected to the formation of the infills of settlement features and the recycling of the building materials (daub and wood) and waste management. These research questions are addressed through the analysis of plant macroremains, charcoals, phytoliths, starch, micromorphology, p…

  • Rethinking Key Transformations in the Neolithic and Bronze Age Central Europe: A Radiocarbon Modeling Approach

Open Access•Václav Vondrovský, Václav Hrnčíř et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Research•2025•References: 57

The past two decades have revolutionized our understanding of European prehistory, shaping new grand narratives focused on core regions with rich archaeological records. These studies suggest that major sociocultural shifts in central Europe, such as the Early Neolithic transition to farming, the spread of steppe ancestry during the Late Neolithic, and the rise of complexity at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, were synchronous across extens…

  • Hoard with a miner’s pick from Krtely in South Bohemia: On the question of the relations of hoards, imports and burial mounds of the Urnfield period

Open Access•Ondřej Chvojka, Luboš Jiráň et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2024

This article presents a hoard of 27 metal artefacts and fragments of one ceramic vessel from the South Bohemian site of Krtely, dated to the earlier phase of the Late Bronze Age (Br D – Ha A1). Two exceptional phenomena are associated with the hoard. The first is its placement in a burial mound, and the second is the presence of two fragments of a broken miner's pick, analogous to those found in the salt mines of Hallstatt. In addition to typolog…

  • Proměny pohřebních zvyklostí starší a mladší doby železné ve střední Evropě / Changes in the burial customs in the Early and Late Iron Age in Central Europe

Open Access•Miloslav Chytráček, Ondřej Chvojka et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2022

Burial customs underwent gradual changes during the Iron Age, sometimes revealing significant upheavals occurring in the socio-spiritual sphere of the time. Both commonalities and differences between Western and Eastern Europe can be observed in the development of Iron Age burial practices. Particular attention is paid to the differences between the western and eastern parts of Central Europe, which come to the forefront in LT C2 and are probably…

  • Deposition analysis and the hidden life of Bronze Age houses

    Open Access•Martin Kuna, Andrea Němcová et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 30

This paper deals with the application of deposition analysis to an unusual type of features in the Late Bronze Age settlements in Central Europe. These are long narrow trenches (referred to as ‘long pits’ in this text) with characteristic standard form and alignment, as well as find contents, including high amounts of secondary-burned pottery fragments. In the context of prehistoric research, these features represent a relatively new phenomenon t…

  • A quantitative approach to magnetometer survey data: The case of the Late Bronze Age site of Březnice

Open Access•Martin Kuna, Roman Křivánek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This paper summarizes the extensive magnetometer survey (over 17 ha) of an important archaeological site in South Bohemia (Czechia). The Late Bronze Age settlement of Březnice has become known for a large amount of specific and at first enigmatic features: trenches, rich in burnt material and structured depositions of finds. Apart from processing by usual methods, magnetometer data has been handled in a less common way in terms of its informative…

Tábor) z pohledu archeologie a archeobotaniky

Písek) pohledem archeologie a archeobotaniky

Open Access•Ondřej Chvojka, Petr Menšík et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2018

Depot měděných žeber objevený v r. 2012 v Kučeři na Písecku umožnil díky odborně dokumentovaným nálezovým okolnostem položení několika významných otázek. Vedle typologického rozboru artefaktů z depotu v kontextu zachyceného rozdělení jednotlivých žeber do celkem čtyř svazků byly provedeny archeobotanické analýzy i radiokarbonové datování.

The paper deals with the possible existence of prehistoric pathways across the South Bohemian part of Šumava Mountains. Traces of human activities, mostly in the form of isolated finds, are documented for almost every prehistoric period in the mountainous areas of Šumava. One of them is the recent find of a bronze spearhead from the Bronze Age at Volary, published in this paper
