Textual trajectories
This article maps out and reviews work on textual trajectories and related concepts from sociolinguistics, linguistic ethnography, discourse and literacy studies. The first part of the article argues that work on entextualization and recontextualization, and their incorporation in recent research on textual chains or trajectories, contributes to a new language of description which conceptualizes texts in dynamic terms while still maintaining a se…
Introduction
Theory and Method in Linguistic Ethnography
This chapter provides a sketch of the assumptions, values, frameworks and techniques that currently characterise linguistic ethnography. In keeping with the dynamic that makes it a productive and appealing perspective, we ground our account in a series of historical, institutional and/or methodological encounters, looking at the questions and possibilities that these interactions generate. So we consider the relationships between: linguistics and…

A Window on Children's Lives
This paper is concerned with the challenge of representing children in audio-visual material commissioned by the Open University to support an interdisciplinary undergraduate course on childhood. The paper explores the process of filming and representing children’s lives audio-visually and the ways in which these processes contribute to an understanding of childhood as an unstable conceptual category. Our exploration of these themes rests upon a …
A Broader View of Language in School
Arguing that educational research into language and literacy has neglected the social and cultural dimensions of children’s language use, this article presents a review of recent research from linguistic ethnography which combines close attention to children and teachers’ language use with an analysis of context and social practice. This research reemphasises the complex role of language in children’s socialisation and learning and the importance…
K. Richards
This accessible and engaging study analyses how three different collaborative professional groups (the staff of a small language school, academics in the author's own university department, and scientists in an agricultural research unit) construct and reaffirm their group identities, through the talk which constitutes their being at work. In the research on which the book is based, Keith Richards aimed to investigate how such mutually supportive…
Introduction
This special issue of Applied Linguistics was produced in the context of, and in response to, the recent surge of interest in everyday creativity in language, and the potential for continuities between such everyday creativity and ‘high culture’ literary language (e.g. Tannen 1989; Cook 1997, 2000; Crystal 1998; Carter 1999, 2004; Norrick 2001; Goddard 2003; Carter and McCarthy 2004; Maybin and Swann 2006). Applied linguistic research has done a …

Death Row Penfriends
In this paper I look at what an ethnographic approach to the study of letter writing can tell us about the nature and meaning of a specific group of correspondences between men incarcerated on death row in the United States and their penfriends in Britain. I focus in particular on the letter writers' views about how the correspondence has changed them as people. While traditional letter writing on paper using pen, pencil or typewriters may have d…
Voices of authority
Story Voices
Five spontaneous narratives from 10 12-year-olds conversations are analysed to show how they contribute to the children s ongoing construction of knowledge and identity. A Labovian analysis of the evaluative function of narrative is supplemented with ethnographic research and Bakhtin and Volosinov s work, to demonstrate more dynamic and complex processes in children s talk. It is argued that the children s use of reported speech drives both the r…
