Data analysis identified six interrelated domains reflecting…

The equitable aging in health conceptual framework
Introduction: Social isolation and loneliness among older adults have garnered significant international attention, particularly as structures and services have evolved during a global pandemic. A growing body of research underscores disparities in social isolation and loneliness among intersecting social (e.g., race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability) and physical (e.g., rural/urban) locations. While empirical data about the…

Aging and Mentorship in the Margins
Objectives For LGBTQ+ communities, learning often happens among chosen families, including older adults. Building on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts of capital (e.g., economic, social, cultural, symbolic) and queer theory of sexual capital, this article examines how LGBTQ+ chosen families share expertise to build knowledge and power across the life course. Methods Using a transformative sequential mixed-methods design from a larger project…
It's Complicated
The sexual and romantic activities of unmarried women at midlife are often invisible in survey research based on normative categories of adult intimacy. However, women at this stage in the life course are structurally positioned to innovate with intimacy. In our interviews with 53 Black and white women between ages 33-58, outside of stable partnerships, and open to sex and intimacy with men, we find that women's frustration with marriage and marr…
Navigating Religious Refusal to Nursing Home Care for LGBTQ+ Residents
In an increasingly polarized world, findings from this study illuminate nuances (and potential new areas of allyship) in how floor staff and managers understand and use various frames when deciding whether or not to accommodate a colleague who refuses care to an LGBTQ+ resident because of religious or moral reasons
Interactions, relationships and belonging
Age-related changes shape social connectedness, isolation and loneliness among older adults. Ageing often accompanies decisions about ageing in place or moving ( i.e. senior living facility). Scant research compares these two living arrangements and even sparser research focuses on older women. This study, thus, poses the following questions: How do older women (aged 75+ years) experience social connectedness and perceived isolation? How does thi…
Caregiving for LGBTQIA+ Older Adults
Religious and moral exemptions have burgeoned since the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed marriage equality in 2015. These laws allow individuals to refuse services based on religious or moral beliefs. LGBTQIA+ advocates have raised concerns regarding exemptions to deny care to LGBTQIA+ individuals with heightened health needs. Research suggests that LGBTQIA+ individuals have higher anticipated needs for nursing home care; however, a gap in empirical r…

While COVID-19 has illuminated numerous barriers for LGBTQ+ olde…

Health insurance rights and access to health care for trans people
Health care rights for transgender and/or nonbinary people have dramatically expanded in recent years, including in insurance coverage for the treatments and procedures they need. Yet, trans people themselves still identify health insurance problems as a top priority for research and policy change because of significant difficulties gaining and using coverage. Wrangling over coverage determinations happens through multiple types of interactions, …

Caregiver stressors and depressive symptoms among older husbands and wives in the United States
Framed by Pearlin's Stress Process Model, this study prospectively examines the effects of primary stress factors reflecting the duration, amount, and type of care on the depressive symptoms of spousal caregivers over a2-year period, and whether the effects of stressors differ between husbands and wives. Data are from the 2004 and 2006 waves of the Health and Retirement Study and we included community-dwelling respondents providing activities of …
