  • Jacob Daniels, The Jews of Edirne: The End of Ottoman Europe and the Arrival of Borders

    Open Access•Özlem Çaykent•ARTICLE•Osmanli Arastirmalari - Journal…•2026

Edirne occupies a distinctive place in Ottoman and Jewish history. Once an imperial capital and long a strategic border city, it was also home to one of the most prominent Jewish communities of the empire. After 1492, Sephardic migrants reshaped the city’s Jewish life, and Sephardim soon became important in demography, language, and communal leadership. A focused study of Edirne’s Jews is especially significant because the late Ottoman and early …

  • Observations on the Border Politics of Cyprus and the Koreas: National Reflexes to a Globalised World

    Özlem Çaykent•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2010•References: 5

The conceptualisation and construction of borders have been an extremely difficult socio-political aspect of our modern times. Even more problematic are the borders opened within a society that lived together once. Two such borders between two societies that have separated for political reasons are between the two Koreas and Cyprus. The Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) in South Korea, still an intransigent border, comes across as an extreme example of a …

  • Enlightened conservatism: John Galt on law, morality and human nature

    Özlem Çaykent•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2004

The Scottish historical novelist, John Galt assumed that the origins of law rested on the anarchistic and primitive nature of human beings, who formed a society on a contractual basis out of the need for security. Although generally agreeing with enlightenment thinkers on the formation of society, law and human nature a divergence in Galt's thought appeared in the secular treatment of crimes. Adhering to prevalent Christian notions about sin and …
