Open Access•Margo Natalie Crawford, Rolland Murray et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge Companion to…•2023

African American literature has changed in startling ways since the end of the Black Arts Era. The last five decades have generated new paradigms of racial formation and novel patterns of cultural production, circulation, and reception. This volume takes up the challenge of mapping the varied and changing field of contemporary African American writing. Although there is some superficial truth to such statements, both works are actually far more interested in exposing and…

To begin, a declaration: it is high time to bestow an adjectival eponym on Paul Beatty (I cast my vote preemptively for “Beattific” rather than the usual sorts of constructions like “Beattyesque” or “Beattian”). Because, yo, Time magazine and Jonathan Franzen, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but the …

    Open Access•Derek Maus, Derek C Maus•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1999

Coetzee emphasize the ways in which the colonial powers misrepresent their intent through the conscious misuse of metaphorical language, especially that surrounding the paternal relationship. Pynchon's V. (1966) and Coetzee's Dusklands (1974) address the issue by presenting a number of settings in which such a distortion of language occurs. These disparate secti…
