  • Brief communication: Population variation in human maxillary premolar accessory ridges (MxPAR)

    Open Access•Scott E Burnett, Diane E Hawkey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 7

The purpose of this brief communication is to report the results of an analysis of maxillary premolar accessory ridges (MxPAR), a common but understudied accessory ridge that may occur both mesial and distal to the central ridge of the buccal cusp of upper premolars. We developed a new five‐grade scoring plaque to better categorize MxPAR variation. Subsequently, we conducted a population analysis of MxPAR frequency in 749 dental casts of South Af…

  • Being Weary, They Had Rebelled: Pueblo subsistence and labor under Spanish colonialism

    Open Access•Katherine Spielmann, Katherine A Spielmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2008•Cited by: 40•References: 30

  • Bioarchaeological analysis of cultural transition in the southern Levant using dental nonmetric traits

    Open Access•Jaime Ullinger, Jaime M Ullinger et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Cited by: 15•References: 42

To many Near Eastern archaeologists, the Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age transition in the southern Levant indicates the emergence of a new ethnicity. The question remains, however, whether changes in the material culture are the result of an invasion of foreigners, or instead arose from shifting cultural and technical practices by indigenous peoples. This study utilized dental morphological traits to assess phenetic relationships between the Late…

  • Disability, compassion and the skeletal record: Using musculoskeletal stress markers (MSM) to construct an osteobiography from early New Mexico

    Open Access•Diane E Hawkey•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998•References: 2

Activity patterns seen in the skeletal remains of an adult male (burial 391) from Gran Quivira Pueblo, New Mexico, suggest his complete dependence upon others during the progression of a debilitating disease that began in childhood and lasted until his death in middle adulthood. The combination of clinical disease progression data and joint mobility estimates provide a pattern to help interpret the potential range of his movements. The pattern ca…

  • Comparative analysis of weight gain, hand/wrist maturation; and dental emergence rates in chimpanzees aged 0–24 months from varying captive environments

    Open Access•Mary W Marzke, Dennis Young et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1996•References: 8

Variability during the first 2 years of growth and development is examined in captive chimpanzees. The mixed longitudinal study of 175 animals compares curves of weight, hand/wrist maturation, and dental emergence for groups within the sample which differ in sex, rearing circumstances (mother-reared versus hand-reared), and colony (Primate Foundation of Arizona, White Sands Research Center, and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center …

  • Activity-induced musculoskeletal stress markers (MSM) and subsistence strategy changes among ancient Hudson Bay Eskimos

    Open Access•Diane E Hawkey, Charles F Merbs•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Cited by: 135•References: 25

Although archaeological evidence may express the results of several seasons of activity, the human skeleton, when correlated with archaeological and ethnographic data, provides information concerning daily activities performed throughout an individual's lifetime. Studies in occupational and sports medicine, along with electromyographic analysis of movement, have shown that different activities place different amounts of stress on human bone. In t…
