Open Access•Theis Zetner Trolle Jensen, L Yeomans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 28

Poor preservation of collagen in dry and/or arid environments has hindered the application of Zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis in many regions of the world. As a result, many zooarchaeological investigations have relied exclusively on morphological assessment of fragmentary remains due to the inadequate preservation of biomolecules. The climatic conditions of Southwest Asia include extreme temperature fluctuations unconducive …

  • Non-invasive Archaeology of Skeletal Material by CT Scanning and Three-dimensional Reconstruction

Open Access•Niels Lynnerup, Henrik Hjalgrim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997

The remains of an ancient Sumerian skeleton, approximately 7000 years old, were investigated using the techniques of stereolithography. The very fragile and delicate skeletal material was recovered in a block, thus retaining it in the soil matrix. The excavated block was CT-scanned and the skeletal material was rendered in three dimensions. This formed the basis for a stereolithographic model of the mandible, which was used for physical and denta…

Lea Rehhoff, Peter A Akkermans et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1990•Cited by: 7•References: 2

A series of plaster samples from sites in the Balikh Valley and the Khabour have been analyzed for composition determination. The samples were collected from various architectural features (walls, pits, floors, etc.) representative of different periods. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that all samples from neolithic contexts mainly consist of gypsum, whereas later samples contain lime, gypsum, or a combination of both. The results seem to be ind…

  • Microscope Section Analysis of Pottery

Ingolf Thuesen, Evelyn Oldenburg et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1989•Cited by: 4

  • Technical Analysis of Scarlet Ware Pottery from Mesopotamia

    Ingolf Thuesen•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A multi-disciplinary research program, focusing on Early Dynastic Pottery from the Diyala Region in Iraq, has contributed both to culture historical and methodological aspects of the archaeological exploration of ancient Mesopotamia. Trace-element analysis is found to have great potential as a tool for discriminating pottery workshop traditions. Microscopic section analysis is suggested as an ideal sampling procedure for subsequent scientific ana…

  • Lime plaster in Neolithic Hama, Syria. A preliminary report

    Ingolf Thuesen, Raymond Gwozdz•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1982•Cited by: 3•References: 2

As recent research has shown that lime-production and pyrotechnic predates ceramics in the Levant and Anatolia, samples of relevant material from Hama M dated to the earliest ceramic phase in the area has been examined. By means of x-ray diffraction we have shown that lime was utilized in two variations, a fine ware for vessel and textile plastering, and a coarse ware for floor and wall-plaster. Some of the implicit technological perspectives are…
