The lives of LGBT older adults
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) older adults have unique and varying physical and mental health needs. Yet their experiences have often been ignored in gerontological as well as LGBT studies. This book uses a life course perspective to investigate how LGBT older adults have been shaped by social stigma and systematic discrimination. The book explores not only the challenges and needs of this population but also their strengths an…
Investigating the Needs and Concerns of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Older Adults
Extensive research on the specific needs and concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults is lacking. This article describes the results of both quantitative studies (i.e., LGBT Elders Needs Assessment Scale) and qualitative studies (i.e., focus groups and in-depth interviews with lesbian, gay, or bisexual [LGB] older adults and LGB grandparents) that specifically sought to investigate the unique needs and concerns of L…
Midlife and Older Gay Men Living with HIV/Aids
HIV/AIDS research has mostly focused on younger gay men. This cross-sectional study originated from a larger study of 316 respondents to include a subsample of 38 midlife and older gay men living with HIV/AIDS. The study explores physical and mental health utilization rates, including physical and mental health status. Resiliency, internal health locus of control beliefs, and psychosocial stressors of age and sexual orientation discrimination, st…
Intergenerational Relationships and Informal Care within the Family
The Coming-Out Process of Gay Grandfathers
The coming-out process of adolescent and adult gay and lesbian individuals has been examined; however, individuals in late adulthood who come out to family members have been largely overlooked. Specifically, the coming-out process of grandparents to their grandchildren has received scant attention. Guided by the life-course perspective, a qualitative study was conducted to examine the coming-out experiences of gay grandfathers to their grandchild…
Lesbian and Bisexual Grandmothers' Perceptions of the Grandparent-Grandchild Relationship
There is currently a tremendous void in the gerontological research on the grandparent-grandchild relationship when grandparents are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (GLBT). This article highlights the findings from a qualitative study that explored the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of lesbian and bisexual grandmothers. Sixteen self-identified lesbian or bisexual grandmothers from the Midwest participated in face-to-face interviews. C…
Women's Financial Planning for Retirement
Providing care for an aged parent has immediate financial, emotional, psychological, and physical consequences for the primary caregiver. This pilot study of 138 middle aged and older females analyzes the long term financial consequences of providing care to aged relatives for female caregivers. The impact of this disruptive life event (e.g., caring for an aged relative) on retirement planning among middle aged and older adult women was analyzed …
Auxiliary Caregivers
This qualitative study investigated the perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of grandchildren living in multigenerational caregiving environments. In-depth, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with care recipients (grandparents), primary/secondary caregivers (parents), and auxiliary caregivers (grandchildren) from three multigenerational caregiving families. Six themes emerged from the data: (1) Grandchildren's percep…
Positive Connections
Mental health professionals working with parents who suffer from a mental illness often overlook the children within the family. Children whose parents are mentally ill face numerous obstacles to their own emotional development and these children are at higher risk for developing mental illnesses than other children. These risks can be decreased if protective or positive interventions are available for the children. This article will describe the…
