  • They're not mentally ill, their lives are just shit”

    Open Access•T Price, Thomas J Price et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 8

The rise in mortality in high-income countries from drug, suicide, and alcohol specific causes, referred to collectively as 'deaths of despair', has received growing interest from researchers. In both the US and UK, mortality rates from deaths of despair are higher in deprived, deindustrialised communities. In this qualitative study, we sought to learn how stakeholders working with vulnerable populations in Middlesbrough, a deindustrialised town …

  • Austerity, welfare cuts and hate crime

Open Access•Kerry Bray, Nils Braakmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 57

From 2010 the UK entered an ‘age of austerity’, with major cuts to welfare payments. We study the link between these cuts and increases in hate crimes. Using a panel of 313 Community Safety Partnerships areas in England and Wales, we show that for each £100 loss per working age adult, racially or religiously motivated crimes rose by approximately 5-6% in 2013/14 and 2014/15. These effects are large given a mean loss of £450 per working age adult …

METHODS: Country-level data on monthly COVID-19 cases and deaths between March 2020 and October …

  • Impact of a link worker social prescribing intervention on non-elective admitted patient care costs

    Open Access•John Wildman, Josephine M Wildman•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Healthcare systems in many countries are enthusiastically adopting link worker social prescribing interventions that aim to tackle the social determinants of health by linking patients to voluntary and community sector activities and sources of support to address their social needs and improve condition management. Social prescribing interventions aim to improve health and reduce healthcare spending. However, despite the diversion of healthcare b…

  • Intervention components of link worker social prescribing programmes

Open Access•Sahil Sandhu, Tyler Lian et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2022

In the United Kingdom (UK), link worker social prescribing has emerged as an option to improve long-term condition management and address primary care patients' non-medical needs by linking patients with community-based activities and support. Social prescribing is a complex, heterogenous intervention, and there is currently no taxonomy of components to guide its implementation and evaluation. This study aimed to identify and categorise the compo…

    Open Access•Heather Brown, Huasheng Xiang et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 32

The environment in which we live impacts on our health. The food available to us in our environment is likely to influence what we eat and subsequently our weight. The use of planning policy can be one way for both local and national government to help shape a healthy environment. In England there are three main types of planning policy used to promote a healthy food environment: 1) restricting new fast-food outlets near schools; 2) restricting n…

Carol Cristina Guarnizo-Herreño, Shaun Scholes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2021•References: 36

BACKGROUND: While inequalities in oral health are documented, little is known about the extent to which they are attributable to potentially modifiable factors. We examined the role of behavioural and dental attendance pathways in explaining oral health inequalities among adults in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. METHODS: Using nationally representative data, we analysed inequalities in self-rated oral health and number of natural teeth. Hig…

  • Explaining time changes in oral health-related quality of life in England

Georgios Tsakos, Carol Cristina Guarnizo-Herreño et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2017•References: 31

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are highly prevalent and impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). However, time changes in OHRQoL have been scarcely investigated in the current context of general improvement in clinical oral health. This study aims to examine changes in OHRQoL between 1998 and 2009 among adults in England, and to analyse the contribution of demographics, socioeconomic characteristics and clinical oral health measures. ME…
