Latent Class Analysis of Maternal Vaccine Attitudes and Beliefs
Background. Maternal vaccine coverage is suboptimal, and a substantial proportion of parents have concerns about vaccines. Most parents seek out vaccine information during and immediately after their first pregnancy. No study to our knowledge has analyzed survey data to identify homogeneous groups of pregnant women based on their vaccine attitudes and beliefs. Aims. To identify homogeneity among groups of pregnant women based on their vaccine att…

Age estimation of archaeological remains using amino acid racemization in dental enamel
The poor accuracy of most current methods for estimating age‐at‐death in adult human skeletal remains is among the key problems facing palaeodemography. In forensic science, this problem has been solved for unburnt remains by the development of a chemical method for age estimation, using amino acid racemization in collagen extracted from dentine. Previous application of racemization methods to archaeological material has proven problematic. This …
The energetic costs of load-carrying and the evolution of bipedalism
Detecting plague
The archaeological definition of a plague should be possible from skeletal populations, because the age profile of a population afflicted by a catastrophe will be different to that of a community exposed to a more normal mortality. The authors show how this can be done using a Bayesian statistical analysis

Age estimation from the auricular surface of the ilium
A revised method for estimating adult age at death using the auricular surface of the ilium has been developed. It is based on the existing auricular surface aging method of Lovejoy et al. ([1985] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 68: 15–28), but the revised technique is easier to apply, and has low levels of inter‐ and intraobserver error. The new method records age‐related stages for different features of the auricular surface, which are then combined to…
The nature and timing of faunal change in the British Isles across the Pleistocene/Holocene transition
The abrupt change in climate during the last deglaciation is reflected in the British Isles by a transition from periglacial to temperate faunas. In contrast to the coleopteran record, terrestrial mammals characteristic of the Lateglacial persist for several hundred years in southern Britain after the end of the Younger Dryas (Loch Lomond Stadial, end-Pleistocene). This lag in the vertebrate faunal transition could reflect a delay in the Holocene…

The nature and affinities of the “robust” Australopithecines
Phylogenetic Analysis of Early Hominids [and Comments and Reply]
The proposal of the new australopithecine species Australopithecus afarensis has led to a multiplicity of hypotheses concerning the evolutionary relationships between the known Pliocene and Pleistocene hominid species. We use phylogenetic analysis to gain a new perspective on the subject. Using 69 traits, we construct a series of 12 complexes, each with a defining polarized morphocline. Four mutually exclusive cladograms are derived from these co…
The primate pelvis
A reappraisal of variation in hominid mandibular corpus dimensions
The relationship between breadth and height of the mandibular corpus has been investigated in a sample of 77 hominid mandibles. An interspecific allometric increase in robusticity with size occurs between four taxonomic subgroups of Australopithecus , but subgroups of Homo vary in robusticity while differing little in size. Within taxonomic subgroups, variation in breadth is not significantly related to variation in height among the “gracile” aus…
