Mediating Mobility
This article examines the evolving role of brokers in facilitating and sustaining migration from Malabar to the Persian Gulf, with a particular focus on Mappila Muslims. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Kerala, it traces how brokerage has remained central to mobility across different phases of the Malabar–Gulf migration corridor. Rather than treating brokers simply as exploitative middlemen, the article situates them as socially embedded actors…
Assemblages of exclusion
As an exploratory and critical study examining what seems to have been overlooked regarding the Chalo India diaspora campaign’s roots and characteristics, the article highlights the campaign’s potent formation within the populist nationalist habitus of Hindutva politics. Put it differently, the article casts light on the granularity of the ways in which the populist Hindu nationalist politics has shaped and been embedded in the campaign. It conte…
The strength of strong ties
The scholarship on cross-border labour migration in India is characterised by the notoriety of the labour intermediaries. However, such a focus often eclipses the mutually beneficial social exchanges found among the migrants, would-be migrants, and their larger social circle. Against this backdrop, this paper focuses on the migration strategies of a leading migrant community in India- the Mappila Muslims of Kerala. Our findings suggest that, alth…
The ‘Economic’ in Indian Sociology
A cursory glance at the century-old history of Indian sociology reveals its relative under-engagement with economic phenomena and processes. Although the ‘economic’ did get studied under the influence of agrarian and village studies, and certain apparently economic themes such as industry and labour did attract scholarly attention from some sociologists, we notice the absence of a sustained and robust academic tradition of sociological studies of…
Studying Bureaucracy in Post-Colonial India
This article presents a critical assessment of the new wave of anthropological scholarship on bureaucracy and its relevance in India. Dealing primarily with everyday bureaucratic practices, and their entanglements with local hierarchies of power, status and wealth, such studies underline the contingent and contextual nature of the enterprise of ‘state-making’. Moreover, they direct our attention away from the normative, formal-institutional confi…
The Ladakh Crisis and India’s Ontological Security
The recent military standoff between India and China in Ladakh had received tremendous public attention, both domestic and international. Mounting uncertainty, chaos, and looming instability marked the crisis for the fact that it shattered the prolonged stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Particularly for India, it marked the heightening national security challenges from China. While the discussions that followed the crisis explored…
