  • Choreographies of 21st Century Wars

Gay Morris, Jens Richard Giersdorf•BOOK•Choreographies of 21st Century Wars•2016

'Choreographies of 21st Century Wars' addresses the interface between choreography and war in this century. The book challenges concepts of choreography as solely a structuring mechanism and an aesthetics of politics that is exclusively resistant. Instead, in the context of 21st-century war, it calls for a rethinking of choreography that incorporates the disorder and dispersion of power away from nation-states, which is central to this century. The Body of the People is the first comprehensive study of dance and choreography in East Germany. More than twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jens Richard Giersdorf investigates a national dance history in the German Democratic Republic, from its founding as a Communist state that supplanted the Soviet zone of occupation in 1949 through the aftermath of its collapse forty years later, examining complex themes of nationhood, ideolog…

    Open Access•Jens Richard Giersdorf•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 6

For the past thirteen years, I have been traveling to the United States from my home country of Germany, first as a graduate student in California and later as a professor living in New York. Every time I pass through immigration, I am asked a series of questions regarding my final destination and my occupation. The latter always leads to some confusion, because when I am asked what I do, my accent seems to turn “dance history” into “dentistry.” …

  • Trio A Canonical

    Open Access•Jens Richard Giersdorf•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Despite Yvonne Rainer's subversive refusal to stage Trio A as a spectacle, to have it represent or narrate social structures, or to engage with the audience in a traditional manner, the landmarks of canonization have all been put upon it. The Banes-produced 1978 film of Rainer dancing Trio A was recently exhibited while the dance was performed live simultaneously by Pat Catterson, Jimmy Robert, and Ian White at the Museum of Modern Art, the insti…

  • Border Crossings and Intra-National Trespasses

    Jens Richard Giersdorf•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Even though Jo Fabian and Sasha Waltz each base one of their dance theatre pieces on East German identity during and after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, their distinct approaches and trainings produce dramatically different choreographies. By examining the dialectical relationships of their productions with East German citizens' conscious pedestrian movements at that time, I illuminate the role of choreography in the creation of societa…
