Winter is coming: The battle over cold chain logistics in the global agriculture
The road transport of food is often overlooked in analyses of the socio-ecological impacts generated by the global agri-food chain. However, the development of fast, cheap and precise long-distance transport has been a key enabling factor for the integration of agro-export enclaves into international markets. This article uses a qualitative methodology to analyse the logistical rationality of European big retailers and its impact on the restructu…
The globalization of everything: Ritzer's influence on Spanish sociology
The work of Professor George Ritzer had an early impact on Spanish academia. In this article we analyse Ritzer's reception in Spanish sociology. We identify two modalities of reception, one as a ‘metatheorist of sociology’, around his manuals of sociological theory, and the other as a ‘theorist of social reality’, focusing mainly on consumption. We argue that Ritzer's incorporation into the Spanish sociological field, while important, leaves room…
Luis Cernuda: Poesía y Tragedia
The analysis of the tragic nature of modern culture is one of George Simmel's most important contributions. The Berlin-born author developed his concept of the tragic in several works and applied it to various objects of study including art and artists. This short essay discusses, first, the concept of the artist and tragic art that Simmel defines for the study of Michelangelo's life and work. Secondly, Simmel's theoretical proposal on artistic p…
This article aims to draw attention to the impact of the reproduction of inequality in the global agri-food chain as one of the potential causes of the profound ecological impact of intensive agriculture on the Mar Menor. After describing the diagnoses of the agrarian and environmental coalitions and exploring the discrepancy between, on the one hand, the conflict between the coalitions on the diagnosis and, on the other hand, the scientific cons…
The nature of standards: How standards shape the value of nature
The article analyzes how the Global G.A.P. standard has contributed to the construction of a link between nature and agriculture and to a form of nature valuation that has strong historical roots in the process of agricultural modernization of the Region of Murcia. It explores how Global G.A.P. has created an institutional and normative space in which the interactions of human and non-human elements (technology, norms, procedures, nature values, …
Geological risk assessment for cultural heritage conservation in karstic caves
The Origin and Geochemical Characterization of Red Ochres From the Tito Bustillo and Monte Castillo Caves (Northern Spain)
Ochres were the most common source materials for pigments used in Palaeolithic rock art paintings. This work analyses the petrographic and geochemical signatures of different ochre samples from outcrops inside Tito Bustillo Cave and the Monte Castillo Caves using the most common techniques (petrography, XRD, SEM–EDS and ICP–MS) in archaeological pigment characterization studies. The results obtained permit the identification and characterization …
