  • Pandemic effects on regional job matching in Austria

Michael Christl, Áron Ki et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2025•References: 1

This paper examines labour market matching in Austria from 2008 to 2024, focusing on the regional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using monthly administrative data, we estimate Beveridge curves and matching efficiency across federal states. The results show that while COVID-19 temporarily disrupted labour market matching, mismatch unemployment returned to pre-pandemic levels relatively quickly. However, this national recovery masks persistent re…

  • Net Fiscal Contributions in the EU—The Role of Indirect Taxation and In‐Kind Benefits

    Open Access•Michael Christl, Monika Koeppl-Turyna et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2025•References: 13

This paper extends the traditional concept of disposable income by including in‐kind transfers for education and health as well as consumption taxes in the analysis. This extended view of tax–benefit systems offers a more comprehensive understanding of redistribution mechanisms within countries and facilitates cross‐country comparisons. As a first step, our analysis identifies households as either net contributors or net beneficiaries based on th…

  • Public redistribution in Europe

Open Access•Bernhard Hammer, Michael Christl et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Economics of…•2023

Governments face a potential trade-off between provision for the population in retirement and the support of working-age households with low income. Using EUROMOD-based microdata from 28 countries, we quantify public redistribution to pensioner- and working-age households, distinguishing also by income quartiles. In general, Northern European countries are characterized by a low net redistribution between households, limited public pensions, but …

  • Monetary compensation schemes during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Michael Christl, Silvia De Poli et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2023•Cited by: 1

This paper analyses the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on household disposable income and household demand in the European Union (EU) during 2020, making use of the EU microsimulation model EUROMOD and nowcasting techniques. We show evidence of heterogeneity in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labour markets in EU Member States, with some countries hit substantially harder than others. Most EU Member States experience a large drop in m…

  • Does it pay to say ‘I do’? Marriage bonuses and penalties across the EU

Open Access•Michael Christl, Silvia De Poli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 1

We analyse the different fiscal treatment of married and cohabiting couples across all EU Member States using microsimulation methods. Our article highlights important differences across EU countries’ tax–benefit systems, where seven countries show substantial bonuses for married couples and four exhibit marriage penalties. On a micro level, we find that these marriage bonuses/penalties differ substantially across household types and income. From…

  • The Lock-in Effect of Marriage

Open Access•Michael Christl, Silvia De Poli et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•References: 3

In this paper, we use EUROMOD, the tax-benefit microsimulation model of the European Union, to investigate the impact of marriage-related tax-benefit instruments on the financial incentives to work of married couples. For each spouse, we estimate their individual marginal effective tax rate and net replacement rate before and after marriage. We show that the marriage bonus, which is economically significant in eight European countries, decreases …

  • Mismatch unemployment in Austria

    Open Access•René Böheim, Michael Christl•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Over the past decade, the Beveridge curve in the Austrian labour market has shifted significantly outward. Using detailed administrative data on job vacancies and registered unemployed persons by region and skill level, we investigate which factors have caused this shift. We find that the Beveridge curve has shifted mainly because mismatch has increased significantly. Looking at the regional and skill level dimensions of mismatch unemployment, we…

  • Determinants of Public‐Sector Efficiency

    Open Access•Michael Christl, Monika Koeppl-Turyna et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2020

This paper investigates the determinants of public‐sector efficiency, in particular the role of fiscal decentralization and fiscal rules. For 23 European countries over the period from 1995 to 2015, we construct a measure of public‐sector performance consisting of nine distinct indices for each area of public policy, such as administration, health education, economic performance, security and infrastructure. We use several efficiency techniques, …

  • Wage differences between immigrants and natives

    Michael Christl, Monika Köppl-Turyna et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2020•References: 27

This paper analyses the impact of literacy skills on wage differences between natives and immigrants, using Austria as a case study. We show that, for both groups, literacy skills are an important determinant of the hourly wage. In the second step, we show that differences in proficiency with respect to literacy can explain more than 30% of the total wage gap of 11 log points between natives and immigrants. When adding literacy skills to the wage…
