  • A Dyadic Analysis of Grandparent and Adult Grandchildren Solidarity and Topic Avoidance

    Open Access•DeAnne Priddis, Erin K Ruppel et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2021

The grandparent-adult grandchild relationship is integral to the health and preservation of the family. The intergenerational relationship makes several transformations as each party ages and experiences life transitions. This study used actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) to examine affectual and consensual solidarity and topic avoidance in the grandparent-adult grandchild dyad. The sample for this quantitative study included 62 grandpare…

  • Implications of Sex Guilt: A Meta-Analysis

    Tara M Emmers-Sommer, Tara M Emmers‐sommer et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 100

A meta-analysis of the literature examining the outcomes related to feelings of sex guilt was conducted. The analysis demonstrates gendered differences in the experience of sex guilt and myriad attitudinal and behavioral impacts. Specifically, men report lower levels of sex guilt, r = −.227 than do women and implications of sex guilt experience are vast, including its association with engagement in less sexual activity, r = −.337, less favorable …

  • Differences in Cognitive Relativity Between Americans’ and Koreans’ Assessments of Self

    Tae-Seop Lim, Tae‐seop Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2008

Earlier studies on identity have reported that North Americans and East Asians have very distinct views of self. While North Americans related consistency, stability, and clarity of self to high self-esteem, good social adjustment, and strong true self, East Asians, who tended to contextualize their identity and demonstrate high inconsistency and lack of clarity, did not relate these tendencies to lack of self-esteem or true self. Markus and Kita…

  • Evaluating the Effectiveness of Distance Learning: A Comparison Using Meta-Analysis

Open Access•Mike Allen, Edward A Mabry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2004

This article uses meta-analysis to summarize the quantitative literature comparing the performance of students in distance education versus traditional classes. The average effect (average r=.048, k= 39, N= 71,731) demonstrates that distance education course students slightly outperformed traditional students on exams and course grades. The average effect was heterogeneous, and the examination of several moderating features (presence or absence o…

  • Effects with Multiple Causes: Evaluating Arguments Using the Subjective Probability Model

Mike Allen, Nancy Burrell et al.•ARTICLE•Argumentation and Advocacy•2000

This study examines whether or not the subjective probability model accurately predicts the beliefs of an individual for circumstances of a single event with multiple causes. The mathematical model specified by the subjective probability model continues to provide some degree of prediction for beliefs prior to the exposure to a message. After exposure to a persuasive message, the model did not maintain the same level of accuracy of prediction. Se…

  • Comparing the Impact of Homosexual and Heterosexual Parents on Children: Meta-Analysis of Existing Research

Mike Allen, Nancy Burrell•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1997•Cited by: 8

Courts determine custody and visitation on the basis of the "best interests of the child." Current judicial rulings in some jurisdictions reflect a bias against awarding custody or granting visitation rights to homosexual parents, favoring the heterosexual parent or heterosexual relative of the child(ren). Should the sexual orientation of the parent play a part in the determination of custody or visitation in order to protect the child? This meta…

  • Family and Workplace Conflict Examining Metaphorical Conflict Schemas and Expressions Across Context and Sex

    Open Access•Patrice M Buzzanell, Nancy A Burrell et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1997•Cited by: 6•References: 48

This investigation examined 620 metaphorical conflict expressions generated by 169 participants who either were employed full-time or had previous work experience. First-order metaphorical (schema) analyses indicated that participants predominately used “conflict is impotence” schemas. No sex differences emerged in either schemas or in second-order (linguistic) analyses of metaphorical expressions. However, participants reported different schemas…

  • The Impact of Disputants' Expectations on Mediation Testing an Interventionist Model

    Open Access•Nancy A Burrell, Nancy Burrell et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 37

This investigation extends previous work in mediation by developing and testing an interventionist mediation model using 91 mediated roommate disputes. A key assumption of the interventionist model is that effective mediators assume active, highly participatory roles in the mediation process. This control based model for mediation presumes that a critical function of a mediator is to orchestrate the interaction by developing and extending the inf…

  • Mediator communicative competence

    William A Donohue, Mike Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 6

In this paper we report on a research program investigating a model of mediator communicative competence in a divorce mediation context. The theory holds that more successful mediators quickly define specific role relationships during mediation through the use of distance, coherence and structuring mediation strategies, and they use these strategies at times that encourage constructive, and discourage destructive, interaction patterns. Data from …
