The role of frailty in the relationships between social relationships and health outcomes: A longitudinal study
The findings suggest that changes in social support have a protective and compensatory role in decreasing depressive symptoms and enhancing cognitive health among older adults with increasing frailty. Public health policy and strategies should consider the impact of social support on multiple health outcomes among older adults with increasing frailty. Further experimental studies and interventions are warranted to extend findings on the relations…
Frailty as a Moderator of the Relationship between Social Isolation and Health Outcomes in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
This research investigated the effects of social isolation on frailty and health outcomes and tested whether these associations varied across different levels of frailty. We performed a multivariate analysis of the first wave of Frailty: A longitudinal study of its expressions (FRéLE) among 1643 Canadian older adults aged 65 years and over. We assessed social isolation using social participation, social networks, and support from various social t…

Ten years of integrated care: Backwards and forwards. The case of the province of Québec, Canada
Québec has a history of integration of health and social services at the structural level. Recent evaluations of the current reform show that the care provided by various institutions in the healthcare system is becoming better integrated. The Québec health care system nevertheless continues to face three important challenges in its management of chronic diseases: implementing the reorganization of primary care, successfully integrating primary a…
Longevity and relationships with children: The importance of the parental role
In this Mediterranean population, maintaining an important role in the lives of one's children is associated with survival. Functions of social networks related to meaning of life and different forms of social support may have important effects on mortality, and these functions may vary across cultures according to family norms and values
Determinants of Adult Day Center Attendance Among Older Adults With Functional Limitations
To enhance ADC intervention effects, levels of participation should be maximized. Study findings suggest ways to promote more regular attendance
Health State Profiles and Service Utilization in Community-Living Elderly
BACKGROUND: We know that health status in older people is heterogeneous and that many need complex care. What is now required is a comprehensive description of this heterogeneity and the estimation of its effects on patterns of service utilization. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the possibility of classifying older people according to their complex health conditions and whether the way in which they consume services differs based on these classes…

Managing Across Boundaries in Health Care: The Forces for Change and Inertia
The problem of managing across boundaries is nowhere more urgent or more complex than in the health care field. On the one hand, there is wide recognition that aging populations, economic pressures, and new technologies are stimulating the need for coordination among diverse health care organizations and professionals in order to provide integrated care (Shortell et al. 1996). On the other hand, the professionals that inhabit the health care fiel…

The family and adults 65 years of age and over: Co‐residency and Availability of Help
The policy makers usually assume that the nuclear family model is almost universally favoured in our industrial and urban society. Governmental agencies are thus left with the responsibility taken over in the past by the extended family. Gerontological literature studied the family support available to the elderly. In general, research results have supported the modified extended family model. Here, the multigenerational household is defined as a…

Effets De Differentes Solutions Factorielles Sur Les Dimensions De Stratification Socio‐ecologique
Factorial analysis has been widely employed in the study of the socioecological, urban stratification structure. Historically, the principal component has been the most used method even if it is not the most appropriate, considering the nature of the data available from censuses for this kind of study. A study of the socioecological stratification structure of five cities in Quebec, with data from the 1971 Canadian census, serves to illustrate th…

Is structural mobility stable in the Province of Québec? There is no unique answer to that question as many structural mobility models can be designed to fit the pattern of occupational distributions in the 1954, 1964, and 1974 occupational mobility tables in Québec. Each of these models drives the researcher to different conclusions concerning the stability of the intergenerational mobility structure. A secondary analysis of mobility data shows …

Interpretation of the strength of relations between variables in log‐linear analysis

The Influence of Medical School Programs on Physicians?? Attitudes Toward Universal Access to Medical Care
The extent to which medical education influences physicians' attitudes toward the issue of universal access to medical care was studied. Data were obtained from a survey of graduates from three medical schools with differing orientations. The first school could be described as traditional and highly research-oriented; the second as also traditional but more middle-of-the-road in its curriculum content; and the third as more social and primary car…

Patterns of Health Services Utilization and Mammography Use Among Women Aged 50 to 59 Years in the Quebec Medicare System
Many studies have identified physicians' recommendation as the single most important predictor of mammography use. Health services utilization is a complex phenomenon, and the contribution of the different dimensions of health services utilization on mammography use is underresearched. This study examines the specific contribution of health services utilization variables in a multivariate model of the recency of mammography use for women aged 50 …
