This article explores the value trajectories of island guano, a fundamental resource in Peru’s economic and political history during the nineteenth century, highlighting its evolution over the past 114 years. The academic literature on economic and political globalization has devoted relatively little attention to guano compared with other resources such as minerals and oil. Although guano has regained importance as an organic fertilizer in both …

Open Access•Gerardo Damonte, Julieta Godfrid et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2026

Extractive developments and local concerns about their impacts have spurred the adoption of new technologies for community-based environmental monitoring (CBEM) of extractive sites. We analyzed the socio-technical processes of technology adoption and adaptation in two CBEM implementation cases in Peru and Chile. Using a qualitative methodology, we argue that the ways social actors select, acquire, learn to use, and interpret technological measuri…

    Open Access•Gerardo Damonte, A Ulloa et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios Atacameños Arqueología y…•2022•Cited by: 2

Public and private policies typically consider the construction of infrastructure the most appropriate response to the problems of water scarcity and water disputes. However, infrastructure in itself not always is the solution. Why water infrastructure is not in itself a solution to water stress and scarcity? How does infrastructure construction deepen inequalities in access to water? This article answers these questions by arguing that water inf…

This remodeling transforms the techno-natural, cultural and political orders and creates new ‘capitalisms’ t…

During the 2000s, the Ica region, located on the Peruvian coast, gained notoriety as the main stage of what the media and politicians called the "agricultural export miracle." The exponential growth of nontraditional exports that ensued, along with the rising importance of the agroindustry in generating foreign currency, led to the emergence of an agribusiness elite as an important new social actor. Through a range of strategies aimed at consolid…

This article analyses the Peruvian government's quest to formalize small-scale mining in the Amazon as a political process which shows how state governance problems are reproduced in the margins of the state. It asks why the central state is unable to govern mining activities in the Madre de Dios region, and examines how small-scale miners have reacted to state attempts to formalize their activities. The author argues that, through political agen…
