Democracy as symbol and as ideology
This article develops an account of the ideological function of the democratic political scene in contemporary liberal democracies. It does so by confronting Claude Lefort's theory of democracy with a structuralist Marxist perspective. According to Lefort, democracies institutionalise a political scene that symbolically acknowledges that a society's future perpetually remains undecided. In contrast, Althusser and Poulantzas foreground the state's…
From agonistic to insurgent democracy
This article uncovers an internal tension within theories of agonistic democracy. On the one hand, as radical pluralists, agonistic democrats want to institute a ‘symmetrical’ political scene where different identities can struggle on an equally legitimate basis. On the other hand, they often normatively prioritize the struggles of oppressed groups against domination. In response, this article proposes to collapse any strict distinction between p…
Insurgency as Situated Invention
The aim of this paper is to theorize insurgent political action on the basis of Jean-Paul Sartre’s Critique of Dialectical Reason. It reconstructs a Sartrean model of insurgency that prioritizes an insurgent group’s capacity for situated inventions. It argues that, similar to Fanon, Sartre theorized that groups that struggle against oppression and exploitation constantly invent novel conditions that steer society in unforeseeable directions. Howe…
Depoliticization as impotent praxis
Comparing traditional and virtual approaches in the micro-excavation and analysis of cremated remains
The physiological linkage between molar inclination and dental macrowear pattern
OBJECTIVES: Exact symmetry and perfect balance between opposite jaw halves, as well as between antagonistic teeth, is not frequently observed in natural masticatory systems. Research results show that asymmetry in our body, skull, and jaws is often related to genetic, epigenetic, environmental and individual ontogenetic factors. Our study aims to provide evidence for a significant link between masticatory asymmetry and occlusal contact between an…
The study of commingled non-adult human remains
A multianalytic investigation of weapon-related injuries in a Late Antiquity necropolis, Mutina, Italy
D enamel thickness in Neandertal and modern human permanent canines
Enamel thickness figures prominently in studies of human evolution, particularly for taxonomy, phylogeny, and paleodietary reconstruction. Attention has focused on molar teeth, through the use of advanced imaging technologies and novel protocols. Despite the important results achieved thus far, further work is needed to investigate all tooth classes. We apply a recent approach developed for anterior teeth to investigate the 3D enamel thickness of…
Allometry, merism, and tooth shape of the lower second deciduous molar and first permanent molar
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the effect of allometry on the shape of lower dm2 (dm2) and lower M1 (M1) crown outlines and examines whether the trajectory and magnitude of allometric scaling are shared between Neandertals and Homo sapiens. METHODS: Our sample included 164 specimens: 57 recent H. sapiens, 44 Upper Paleolithic H. sapiens, 17 early H. sapiens, and 46 Neandertals. Of these, 59 represent dm2/M1 pairs from the same individuals. O…
Cervical and crown outline analysis of worn Neanderthal and modern human lower second deciduous molars
Despite the general increase in digital techniques for dental morphometric analyses, only a few methods are available to study worn teeth. Moreover, permanent dentitions are studied much more frequently than deciduous teeth. In this study, we address both issues by providing a taxonomic classification of Neanderthal and modern human (MH) lower second deciduous molars (dm 2 s) through the analysis of crown and cervical outlines. Crown and cervical…
Report of three fused primary human teeth in an archaeological material
Fusion of deciduous teeth can appear in several ways, usually involving two teeth but occasionally three. The frequency of this anomaly is reported to be low and few cases have been described in the scientific literature. Fused teeth in the archaeological record are rare because of the destructive taphonomic processes to which bones and teeth are subjected. \nPrevious research in this field has only dealt with cases of two fused deciduous teeth. …
