A vision for reinvigorating global mental health
Across individuals, communities, and ecosystems, unequal ways of living mean different experiences and expressions of wellbeing and distress. What would it mean for Global Mental Health (GMH) to start with these disparities in lived-experience, radically, rather than take them as stumbling blocks to unite under a broad GMH umbrella? This question builds on a tradition of critically appraising the GMH field (see e.g. [1]), seeking a re-shaping of …

Caring for the Ordinary in Palestine: When Ongoing Occupation Becomes Maddening
This article offers a reading of contemporary life in Palestine that interrogates the braiding of hope and despair through an examination of expressions of optimism and madness in Palestinian everyday life. Whereas I neither aim to define what madness nor optimism could be taken to mean, I examine vernacular notions of how, when, and why the notion of madness is used in ordinary language, anchored in ethnographic fieldwork in occupied Palestine a…

The Confines of Time - On the Ebbing Away of Futures in Sierra Leone and Palestine
This article contributes to an understanding of the existential character of confinement by directing attention to the interlinked concepts of tiredness and foreboding. Through juxtaposition and analysis of material gathered among people whose lives are lived under compromised circumstances in Sierra Leone and Palestine we illuminate the way time - not only space - confines. Our analytical concern is with the way in which futures are anticipated …
Tattered Textures of Kinship: The Effects of Torture Among Iraqi Families in Denmark
Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Denmark, primarily among Iraqi women and secondarily among Iraqi men who are either direct or indirect victims of torture, I explore how the memories of torture are distributed in the everyday lives of Danish families originating from Iraq. I argue that torture is folded into kin histories and the everyday work of bearing and resisting painful memories. Consequently, torture affects not only the mental and phy…

Ambivalent Attachment - Melancholia and Political Activism in Contemporary Palestine
This article argues that over the course of the past three decades a mood change has occurred in terms of how Palestinians relate to the ideal of an independent Palestinian state. During the first Intifada, from 1987 to 1993,which constitutes the golden age of Palestinian resistance towards Israel's occupation, the Palestinian resistance movement was characterized by a passionate belief in the possibility of a revolutionary transformation. Due to…

The burden of being exemplary: National sentiments, awkward witnessing, and womanhood in occupied Palestine
This paper offers an analysis of how Palestinian wives of detainees are made into examples, both by themselves and by the people they are intimate with, whilst considering also the context of these women's awkward place in Palestinian narratives of national becoming. The main objective is to examine the burden of being an example, and what that implies for those who aspire to or are subtly coerced into inhabiting the position of an 'exemplary' wo…
Times of Security
In the current world disorder, security is on everyone's lips. But what is security from a cross-cultural perspective? How is it imagined and experienced by people on the ground? Crucially, what visions of the future are at stake in people's potentially divergent concerns with security: what, and when, is the time of security? Exploring diverse notions and experiences of time involved in security practices across the globe, this volume brings tog…
