  • Variables Affecting Creative Contributions across the Adult Life Span

    Open Access•Patricia K Alpaugh, James E Birren•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The purpose of this study was to explore possible explanations of the decline in old age of highly creative contributions. This present study examined whether two explanations were more important than decrements in intelligence. These were (1) decrements in specific divergent thinking abilities and (2) a decline in preference for complexity. Specific creative abilities (divergent thinking) were measured by Guilford tests of redefinition, original…

  • Progress in Research on Aging in the Behavioral and Social Sciences

    Open Access•James E Birren•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

A biobehavioral view of research on aging is suggested, according to which behavior depends upon the limits set by genetic heritage, the modifications and reinforcements of physical and social environments, and the self-concept achieved through the integration of past-life experiences. Cognitive and social behaviors in later adulthood may have resulted from forces of selection, e.g., counterpart theory (biologically based later-life changes are a…

  • Are There Sex Differences in Creativity across the Adult Life Span

    Open Access•Patricia K Alpaugh, James E Birren•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The purpose of this study was to examine sex differences of young, middle-aged, and older adults in creative problem solving and preference for complexity of visual figures and to explore the part degree of sex role identification might play in this relationship. 111 teachers, aged 20–83 years, took a battery of seven creativity tests, two intelligence measures, and the masculinity-femininity scale of the MMPI. Sex differences were found on only …

    Open Access•Francis P Hardesty, Paul B Baltes et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

This memorial symposium, originally presented at the 1977 convention of the American Psychological Association, is an overview of the contributions of Klaus F. • Concepts and criteria of mental health and aging

    James E Birren, V Jayne Renner•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1981•References: 7

Concepts of mental health have evolved for the most part from considerations of childhood and young adulthood. The second half of life has received little attention in theory, research, and service. Increased attention to aging on the part of the behavioral sciences is seen likely as advocacy and numbers of older people continue to increase

  • Psychological examinations of children who later became psychotic

    James E Birren•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1944•Cited by: 5

A follow-up of cases tested in the Chicago Bureau of Child Study shows no promise of predicting later psychosis from the usual clinical tests of problem children. Among the prepsychotics, however, the preschizophrenics tended to be the more intelligent, though the more apathetic, in the childhood examinations.
