Endlings by Celine Song
Reviewed by: Endlings by Celine Song Vivian L. Huang ENDLINGS. By Celine Song. Directed by Sammi Cannold. New York Theatre Workshop, New York City. February 29, 2020. If it feels like the end of the world—and indeed the New York run of Endlings was paused due to Covid-19 public health measures—then this show fittingly takes up the romance of being “the last known individuals of a species.” Featuring Korean and Korean American women characters who…
Contingency plans
This introduction offers contingency as a framework for Asian American and minoritarian world-making in the face of ongoing crisis, precarity, and violence. During the time of a pandemic, the Movement for Black Lives, the uprisings calling for the abolition of police and prisons, and a public reckoning with the safety, support, and “diversity” of staff, students, and faculty within the academy, how have contingency plans become critical, necessar…
What Shall We Do?”
Soomi Kim performed as Asian political radical Kathy Change in the Staging Asian America performance/lecture series at Harvard University in spring 2017. Kim’s performance provokes timely political questions about stereotypes of gendered Asian docility and suggests that the ephemerality of Asian and feminine dissidence is all but erased in official institutional spaces. Performance, then, is the medium through which Asian feminine presence persis…
Inscrutably, actually
With interest in queer socialities, the author considers Jacques Derrida’s provocation in Of Hospitality to “say yes” as hospitable gesture in order to challenge the gendered and racialized demands of this charge. If Orientalist conflations of the East with femininity have in turn sexualized Asian women as simultaneously hypersexual and submissive, then how can we as viewers and readers performatively read Asian femininity in a different, and not…
Modern, Modular, Model
This article reconsiders the persistent Asian American stereotype of model minority by analyzing the contemporary visual art practice of Brooklyn-based Mika Tajima through 1960s discourses of the Herman Miller Research Corporation’s Action Office furniture series, the model minority myth, and British psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott’s theory of transitional phenomena. It examines the overlapping aesthetics of modular office furniture and model minori…
