Upright and empty-handed to the afterlife
The Early Eneolithic cemetery at Podivín in south Moravia, comprising seven burials together with a contemporary grave from Lednice, provides important evidence for understanding regional diversity in mortuary behaviour between 3800 and 3600 BCE. This study integrates multiple lines of bioarchaeological evidence – physical anthropological examination, palaeopathological assessment, isotope analysis (C, N, and Sr), dental microwear, and radiocarbo…
Determining the roots of Urnfield Culture at Přáslavice, Czech Republic
This study examines the residential mobility patterns and funerary practices of an Urnfield cemetery at Přáslavice, Czech Republic, using radiocarbon dating, carbon, oxygen, and strontium isotope analyses, and FTIR analysis. A regional bioavailable strontium baseline map was created using strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) of modern plant samples (n=208) from 70 localities across Moravia and Czech Silesia. Radiocarbon dates (n=17) suggest that …

The diet of settled Neolithic farmers of east-central Europe
The Late Migration Period Cemetery at Drnholec (Břeclav District, Czech Republic) / Pohřebiště z konce doby stěhování národů z Drnholce (okres Břeclav, ČR)
The authors present part of a burial ground of the Late Migration Period in Drnholec - Pod sýpkou (Břeclav district, Czech Republic), where seven graves were discovered in 2016 and 2017. The grave goods were identified, by typological analysis, as Langobardian/Lombardian. The authors argue that even a small part of a cemetery with a limited number of graves can bring important new data and open strategic questions, challenging traditional interpr…
Unusual find of osteolytic lesion on skeleton from the Middle Bronze Age—Possible case of peritoneal abscess
During rescue archeological excavation in 2018, the skeletal remains of a young male with an unusually large and rare lytic focus in the right iliac fossa, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, were found at the Mikulov site (Czech Republic). The presented communication considers various diseases that could be the cause of this pathological condition (tuberculosis, syphilis, mycosis, parasitic diseases, tumors, peritoneal abscess). The examination met…
The possible manifestation of scurvy on skeletal remains dated to 3800–3700 BC
The presented report describes the skeletal remains of a young man with multiple pathological changes, dated to between 3800-3700 BC. The studied skeletal remains were subjected to classical anthropological analysis. The palaeopathological study was based on detailed macroscopic examination supplemented by histological and radiological examinations. In addition to the disorder of flat cranial bones, dental developmental defects, traces after peri…
Hrob s kamennou konstrukcí ze střední doby bronzové z Mikulova - A grave with a stone construction from the Middle Bronze Age from Mikulov, south Moravia
A grave dated to the Middle Bronze Age with two burials in stone chambers represents a unique find in Moravia. The grave was the solitary feature from the given period at the excavation site, without any barrow identified. Part of the stone used for the construction is querns from a 40 km distant source, most of the structure is made of local limestone. Both burials – a child and an adult – were deposited simultaneously and furnished with persona…
Serious chronic disease of the cervical spine and trauma in a young female from the middle ages (Czech Republic)
Nové poznatky o stravě mužů z kumulace lidských ostatků K7/90 na Cezavách u Blučiny v mladší době bronzové
Příspěvek zpřesňuje a rozšiřuje informace o stravě pěti dospělých mužů z kumulace lidských ostatků K7/90 velatické fáze kultury středodunajských popelnicových polí v lokalitě Cezavy u Blučiny.
