Control and care in homeless service provision
Homeless service providers rely on practices of control with the intention of leading people experiencing homelessness into housing. These practices often reflect larger government rationalities of management and control of homelessness. Coupling these practices with the professionalization of homelessness resources, Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) are software used to gather data on service users to support case management and to …
“We've Got to Keep You Where You Are”
The last two decades have seen countless local, provincial, and even federal promises to end homelessness in Canada. These efforts to end homelessness have largely failed, and in many communities, there has been an increase in the number of people who are unhoused. We argue that preventing evictions for people who are at risk of losing their housing for financial reasons is a small but important part of larger efforts to prevent homelessness. We …
Shelter in place
Constant crisis management
Queering Shelter
2SLGBTQ+ adults face unique experiences of homelessness often marked by heightened victimization. Notably, homelessness resources represent challenging environments where, in addition to risks of discrimination, 2SLGBTQ+ adults often do not have support that reflects their unique needs to exit homelessness. The case of Montreal, Canada, is particularly concerning as no resource specifically supports this group. This research set out with the foll…
Adapting Homelessness Interventions for People Who Use Drugs or Alcohol in Montreal, Quebec
Background: Under a housing affordability crisis, Montreal, Canada, is host to a growing homeless population. While people who use drugs or alcohol make up a large part of this group, homeless resources in the city continue to exclude them through sobriety rules or by not adapting programming to their specific needs. This systematic exclusion, and the conditions of these resources, can often be retraumatizing for individuals seeking help. Applyin…
Towards a “trauma-informed spaces of care” model
While clinical practitioners have long recognized the importance of trauma-informed models of care, geographies of care scholars have been slow to engage with and address trauma in its methodologies for better understanding environments that support, or hinder, care for people. Marrying the conceptual contributions of geographies of care, trauma geographies, and geographies of addiction, this paper aims to advance the inquiry of trauma-informed s…
An Anarchist Approach to Addressing Housing Precarity
The right to housing is fraught with impositions of market housing logic: our solutions to housing generally imply that people must be housed in conventional housing markets, with a goal that they contribute to an economy that sustains this housing model. Using an anarchist conceptual framework, this paper explores the shortcomings of some existing approaches, challenging the assumption that people experiencing housing precarity inherently desire…
Working Together in Montréal to Improve Veterans’ Well-Being
Services for veterans in Canada can be unclear and difficult to navigate for civilian service providers working with veterans. In this article, we feature two Montréal-based initiatives that aim to improve services for veterans through collaboration, the Old Brewery Mission and Respect Forum. We begin by providing background information about Canada’s recent history of military engagements and veterans affairs issues. The first example of collabo…
