Excess in the Queue
In this paper, I explore how the long waiting period for a public flat in Singapore offers fertile ground for examining excess. I first consider how learning to wait shapes my interlocutors – and, by extension, their families – into a particular kind of pliant social unit. I show how the logics cultivated through prolonged waiting extend into other arenas of life, including interactions with the unhoused. Yet while such imitation suggests success…
Across Time, Through Silence
This article examines how a Taiwanese immigrant family in Singapore engages in caregiving practices that enable kin or family members to move through life. I contend that silence, in the form of half-truths and partial knowledge, fosters imaginative avenues for others. To illustrate this, I scrutinise the interplay between speech and silence within a community of Taiwanese immigrants in Singapore, whose lives intersected with the era of ‘The Whit…
Built-to-Order Romances
This article is centrally concerned with how couples in Singapore who are attempting to secure a public housing flat rearrange romantic projects to hedge against the financial risks of relationship breakdown or tinker with romantic temporalities to hedge against the uncertainties of balloting. Through examining the strategies Singaporean couples use to manage the uncertainties of the ballot-preemptive planning, microcalibration, and romantic hedg…

It explores the ways through which ghosts destabilize the linearity of standard time to inscribe heterogenous planes of time that open up to alternative political visions. Through reexamining case studies of haunting in Thailand, Vietnam…
