Open Access•Yu-Te Huang, Chenxi Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2025

Taiwan is regarded as the vanguard of LGBT+ rights in Asia. We conducted a scoping review to map research on LGBT+ inclusion in Taiwan, identify knowledge gaps and propose future directions for research and policy. Results indicate a predominant focus on health, with the over-representation of gay men and exclusion of lesbian and bisexual women and transgender/gender diverse people. Despite being the first Asian jurisdiction to legalise same-sex …

  • Assessing the Tongzhi Label

    Open Access•Holning Lau, Geoffrey Yeung et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Tongzhi is one of several Chinese terms that refer to individuals who are attracted to the same sex. Using data from two different surveys in Hong Kong, this research note examines how the term tongzhi coexists with other terms. We investigate the prevalence of self-identification as tongzhi, and we explore the extent to which using the term tongzhi influences public attitudes toward gay people and gay rights. Activists began popularizing the ter…

Using data from a 2013 telephone survey in Hong Kong (N = 850), we investigate how interpersonal and imagined contact with gays and lesbians affects attitudes toward gay people and gay rights. We also study the demographic correlates of interpersonal contact with gays and lesbians, as well as the correlates of attitudes toward gay people and gay rights. For all demographic groups, we found strong associations between interpersonal contact and fav…

With the rise of globalization, American legal commentators are increasingly directing their attention at developments abroad. When commentators discuss changes in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, they frequently use the terms westernization, westernize, and westernized. This language elevates the status of the West, framing it as the reference point for understanding changes in other parts of the world. In this essay, I draw from the fields of l…

  • Asians and Pacific Islanders in Same-Sex Couples in the United States

    Gary Gates, Gary J Gates et al.•ARTICLE•Amerasia Journal•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The lesbian and gay Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities in the United States represent a rarely studied segment of the larger lesbian and gay community. In part due to their relatively small numbers and the lack of large national surveys that include questions about sexual orientation, social scientists rarely have data to separately explore the characteristics of this population. With large sample sizes and a mechanism to identity same-…
