Education for sustainable development in the senior Earth and Environmental Science syllabus in Queensland, Australia
In Queensland, Australia, a new senior Earth and Environmental Science (EES) syllabus has been approved for first implementation in 2019. Given the natural alignment between EES and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), this study employs document analysis to investigate the extent to which the intended curriculum reflects the tenets of ESD. An exploratory content analysis examined the frequency of keywords to identify any prominent sustai…
Community-Derived Indicator Domains for Social Resilience to Water Quality Decline in a Great Barrier Reef Catchment, Australia
Catchment-derived pollution of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, is instigating the development of novel policy, including community assessments and monitoring of their own resilience to water quality decline. This article explores community perspectives of social resilience to changing water quality in local waterways, and potential indicator domains for framing community-derived indicators. In a regional case study in northern Australia, we in…
Enhancing Community-scale Social Resilience
Qualitative research undertaken in a regional centre of northern Queensland revealed how community members with an interest in water quality see themselves and others being pro-active in maintaining healthy waterways. Interview analysis revealed that respondents saw social resilience to changing water quality as contingent upon personal perceptions of water quality; the ability of a whole community to respond to changes in water quality; and indi…
How do primary pre‐service teachers in a regional Australian university plan for teaching, learning and acting in environmentally responsible ways
Integrated unit plans with an environmental focus can provide opportunities for school students to develop critical thinking skills, and to act in responsible ways - that is, to develop 'action competence'. In this study, environmentally focused integrated unit plans, developed and implemented by final year pre‐service teachers at an Australian regional university, were analysed to determine the extent to which they contained concepts that promot…
Solidarity through collaborative research
While numerous publications signal the merits of collaborative research, few studies provide interpretive analyses of collaborative-research practices or collaborative relationships. Through this multiple case study design of collaborative-research teams, we attempt to provide such an analysis by focusing on the collaborative-research experiences of seven qualitative researchers from two contrasting research teams in Australia and North America. …
Researcher–participant positioning in classroom research
Now that the discursive practices of students and teachers consume the attention of many classroom researchers, it is timely to consider the interrelationships between researchers and their participants or "subjects." Positioning theory gives prominence to the position/speech-act/storyline triad in conversations. While positioning theory has informed several poststucturalist scholars in a variety of settings, the authors are unaware of other stud…
Conceptualising Intercultural Contact in the Supervision of Indigenous Student Teachers
James Cook University is the site of an off-campus, community-based program of teacher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in remote parts of Queensland, Australia. Known as the Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) it has had considerable success, but some unsolved problems persist. Field components of the program include a practicum in the second last year in urban schools. This study set out to explore th…
