Multidimensionality in the Integration of First- and Second-Generation Migrants in Europe
Immigrant integration scholarship increasingly discusses integration as a multidimensional process. Yet there is considerable inconsistency in how that multidimensionality is conceptualized. This article posits that there are two different logical approaches by which multidimensional frameworks of integration tend to outline their dimensions: the “thematic” (or conceptually driven) approach and the “empirical” approach. Multidimensionality and Superdiversity
Multidimensionality has recently arisen as a (welcomed) concern in scholarship around superdiversity and related fields. It is based on the understanding that multiple, interactive, and interdependent domains are present and need to be considered empirically, ideally in a simultaneous manner. This chapter aims to explore the ways in which multidimensionality could be examined from a quantitative empirical perspective, given its relatively rare oc…
Beyond the isolation thesis
Residential concentration is often referred to as an obstacle to the integration of immigrant minorities. Originating from Wilson’s isolation thesis (Wilson, W. J. 1987. The Truly Disadvantaged: The Inner City, the Underclass, and Public Policy. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.), it is assumed that the high ratio of minorities in the neighbourhood decreases chances for social integration, which consequently affects other aspects of integrati…
How do refugees affect social life in host communities? The case of Congolese refugees in Rwanda
This paper investigates how social dimensions of life in local communities are affected by the long-term presence of Congolese refugees in Rwanda, paying particular attention to feelings of safety, social networks and trust. To gauge whether increased probability of interaction with refugees reduces cohesion, these outcomes are compared across local households at varying distances from a refugee camp. This paper is based on mixed methods approach…
