  • Burdened Solidarities Beyond the Impasse

    Ervin Malakaj, B Weber•ARTICLE•English Language Notes•2025

This special issue focuses on sites of relational and cultural practice at which border violence is challenged by solidarity, a major technology of resistance to border regimes. This form of collective action describes the social formation among displaced peoples crossing borders. It also describes the social formation of anyone who enters into solidarity with those displaced people crossing borders. The issue assembles articles that highlight so…

  • Queer occultism

    Open Access•Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2024

The rise of German sexology in the nineteenth century coincides with the rise of occult discourse and practice. The former has always maintained an important status in queer German studies. Scholars have historically turned with great interest to the works of, among others, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Albert Moll, and Magnus Hirschfeld, in order to advance the famous Foucauldian notion that the homosexual was born in the clinic. And with good reaso…

  • Anders als die Andern

    Ervin Malakaj•BOOK•Anders als die Andern•2023

"2019 marked the centennial for the German hygiene film melodrama Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others), which premiered at the Apollo-Theater in Berlin, Germany, May 24, 1919. In film history, it is heralded as the first feature-length moving picture depicting explicit queer love. The film was a collaboration between Richard Oswald (who directed the film), one of the leading genre filmmakers of the 1910s, and the German sexologist Ma…

  • Queer Time and the Cinematic Pleasures of theLocus AmoenusinFree Fall

    Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•GLQ A Journal of Lesbian and Gay…•2023•References: 2

The locus amoenus boasts a long history in cultural representation as a motif affiliated with impossible unions. This article seeks to articulate it as an analytic category for contemporary queer cinema. It does so on the basis of a detailed analysis of Stephan Lacant's Freier Fall (Free Fall, 2013). Lacant's film presents two intertwined temporal structures that converge in the film's evocation of the locus amoenus. On the one hand, Free Fall de…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Kyle Frackman, Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•Monatshefte•2022

In their 2022 minicomic titled “Feindselig” (Hostile), the Munich-based nonbinary nonfictional comics and graphic novelist Illi Anna Heger casts into sharp relief how structures of belonging informing urban design support some forms of life and living at the cost of others. 1 Across eleven panels, Heger shows how hostile designs thwart attempts by animals and humans to dwell in public settings at particular times and in particular ways. In one pa…

  • Preface from the Special Issue Editors

    Kyle Frackman, Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•Monatshefte•2022

While this special issue was in production, we received the unhappy news that one of the issue’s contributors and a leading scholar in our discipline, Robert “Bob” Deam Tobin, had died. Bob’s work had an incredible impact on the field of German Studies and, more broadly, on the subfield of

  • Untimeliness and the Balkan Queer Diaspora in Dennis Todorović’s Sasha

    Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2022

The protagonist in Dennis Todorović’s Sasha (2010) is caught in the midst of competing claims on his future. While his mother ardently nurtures his piano practice, insisting on a career in musical performance in Germany, his father hopes his entire family will return back to their homeland—Montenegro. During his coming out phase, Saša also confronts a mainstream queer culture that does not quite provide him with means by which to fully negotiate …

  • Queer Time in Contemporary German Cinema

Kyle Frackman, Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2022

Time has been an important analytic category in both queer and cinema studies. The former has considered how normative life structures abide by their own temporal rhythms unaccommodating of queer body-minds. The latter has examined how the constitutive factors of cinematic mediation often draw their esthetic prowess from the manipulation of time. Recent scholarship on queer cinema studies—in particular work on global queer cinemas—productively en…

In this forum contribution, the authors reflect on the founding of the Diversity, Decolonization, and the German Curriculum (DDGC) scholarly collective by considering the important role of digital venues in this endeavour. Drawing on the work of Sara Ahmed, the authors consider the individual constitutive spaces in which knowledge is created and circulated by the members of the collective as digital misfit archives. Such archives contain informat…

  • Queer Derailment and Pederast Adoration in Carl Theodor Dreyer's Michael (1924)

    Open Access•Ervin Malakaj•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2019

Some critics of Carl Theodor Dreyer's Michael (1924) have cast the queer bond between the title character and the master painter Zoret as too frail to warrant a queer designation for the film. Especially Zoret's paternal commitment to Michael in conjunction with Michael's rejection of his guardian in lieu of a romantic relationship to an impoverished Russian aristocrat, Zanikow, was seen as cause to doubt queer aesthetic commitments in the film's…
