  • My Child Has Two Parents”

Open Access•Magdalena Markowska, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2025•References: 17

In this study, we explore how women who are both mothers and entrepreneurs construct their subject position as mothers in the presence of dominant discourses. Based on multiple interviews with 15 participants, our findings indicate that women engage in doing and undoing motherhood. Although undoing one's motherhood is related to negotiating one's position vis‐à‐vis social norms and expectations, doing motherhood is related to the construction of …

  • Paying lip service to gender inequality – EU rural development policy in Sweden

    Open Access•Katarina Pettersson, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 31

While research has pointed to the lack of gender mainstreaming in rural and agricultural policy, how rural policy determines what is seen as problems of gender inequality in the first place and how it constructs men and women in relation to rural development remains unexplored. In this article we perform an in-depth analysis of how rural policy constructs gender inequality problems and gendered subjects. We employ the 'What's the problem represen…

  • Labour market integration of refugees in Sweden - Analysing the interactions of CSOs at different levels

    Open Access•Marco Nilsson, Karla Escobar et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2024•References: 52

There has been a gap in knowledge regarding how civil society organisations (CSOs) interact at different levels when working to integrate refugees into the labour market-its causes and limitations. To contribute to filling the gap, this study employs both a rational choice perspective and sociological institutionalism to analyse how and why CSOs in Jönköping municipality in Sweden interacted with other relevant actors, both other CSOs (horizontal…

  • Conceptualising feminist resistance in the postfeminist terrain

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender in Management An…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Purpose In this paper, women entrepreneurs are seen as leaders and women leaders as entrepreneurial, making both groups an easy target of postfeminist expectations, governed by calls to embody the entrepreneurial self. Acknowledging that the entrepreneurial self has its roots in the universal, rational and autonomous subject, which was shaped in a male form during the Enlightenment, the purpose of this study is to conceptualise feminist resistanc…

  • Gender (in)equality within the household and business start-up among mothers

Open Access•Lucia Naldi, Massimo Baù et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2021

Using data on all businesses started by mothers of young children in Sweden between 2000 and 2014, we explore which factors are associated with entrepreneurship among mothers. We find that being unemployed or being an immigrant is positively associated with business start-up by mothers; however, our findings show that what matters more is the paternity leave taken by the mothers’ partners. These findings suggest that in institutional contexts suc…

  • Exploring the false promise of entrepreneurship through a postfeminist critique of the enterprise policy discourse in Sweden and the UK

    Open Access•Helene Ahl, Susan Marlow•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2021•Cited by: 52•References: 54

Contemporary theories of neoliberalism and entrepreneurship are entwined; both hinge upon the use of agency within free markets to realise individual potential, enhance status and attain material rewards. Postfeminism, as a discrete but related discourse, suggests this context is conducive to encouraging women to draw upon their agency, skills and personal profile to enhance achievements and returns. We draw from these related, but discrete disco…

  • Women's entrepreneurship, neoliberalism and economic justice in the postfeminist era

Open Access•Karin Berglund, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2018•Cited by: 29•References: 19

Since the early 1990s, there has been investment in women's entrepreneurship policy (WEP) in Sweden, which continued until 2015. During the same period, Sweden assumed neoliberal policies that profoundly changed the position of women within the world of work and business. The goals for WEP changed as a result, from entrepreneurship as a way to create a more equal society, to the goal of unleashing women's entrepreneurial potential so they can con…

  • Exploring the dynamics of gender, feminism and entrepreneurship

    Open Access•Helene Ahl, Susan Marlow•ARTICLE•Organization•2012

Contrary to the neo-liberal thesis that entrepreneuring is an open and accessible endeavour where personal effort alone determines reward and status, it has been demonstrated that there is a persistent, but occluded, gender bias within the entrepreneurial discourse. Accordingly, women are positioned as lacking and incomplete men; however, despite calls to employ feminist theory as an analytical frame to demonstrate the reproduction of such subord…

  • Research on entrepreneur networks

Laurence Fo, Lene Foss et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Gender…•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 22

Purpose The paper aims to clarify how a gendered analysis of entrepreneurial networks may benefit by the use of a constructionist (post-structuralist) perspective. Design/methodology/approach The paper makes use of a discourse analysis: first, the paper reviews a selection of empirical research articles from 1980 to 2008 on gender and networks in entrepreneurship research in order to convey the main research question, the hypotheses, the methodol…

  • Masculinity, doxa and the institutionalisation of entrepreneurial identity in the novel Cityboy

Robert Smith, Helene Ahl et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Gender…•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 11

Purpose As a result of a plethora of scholarly articles by feminist scholars of entrepreneurship, it is now widely accepted that the notion of entrepreneurship is ideologically skewed towards masculine ideology. Although this body of work has been quietly acknowledged, it has not invoked a reply, or refutation, from male entrepreneurship scholars. Nor has it led to an increase in studies about the influence of masculinity on entrepreneurial behav…

At centre stage are the roles of entrepreneurs, women-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and socially constructed paradigms of gender in this process. The paper's aim is to explore, through a local-level case study, the c…

  • Social constructionism and personal constructivism

Fiona Wilson, Stephen Tagg et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Gender…•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 4

Purpose While the entrepreneurship and small business research literature has tended to portray women as lesser than men in identifying the differences between them, little research has looked at how gender is construed in business ownership. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new focus, examining how male and female business owners construe each other. Design/methodology/approach The research employs George Kelly's personal construct theo…

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a re-directed and purposeful attention to the design of research on gender and entrepreneurship moving forward. Design/methodology/approach The paper questions the value of more studies on the men v. women binary and encourages research on the institutions supporting the gendered construction. Findings The paper suggests a re-framing of gender (to include men, women, femininity, masculinity, etc.) b…

  • Why Research on Women Entrepreneurs Needs New Directions

    Open Access•Helene Ahl•ARTICLE•Entrepreneurship Theory and…•2006

Research articles on women's entrepreneurship reveal, in spite of intentions to the contrary and in spite of inconclusive research results, a tendency to recreate the idea of women as being secondary to men and of women's businesses being of less significance or, at best, as being a complement. Based on a discourse analysis, this article discusses what research practices cause these results. It suggests new research directions that do not reprodu…

  • Motivation in adult education

    Helene Ahl•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 26

Adults' motivation to participate in continued education is of immediate interest, as lifelong learning is now considered as the solution to the pressing problems of increased levels of unemployment, not least among unskilled workers. Many theories concerning motivation and adult education maintain that individuals are innately motivated to learn, and conclude that motivation problems result from various dispositional, situational and structural …
